You'd need to install an addon to get ssh. Folks here might be able to help if they could see the state of the underlying linux file system. IF its not there, it might be best not to mess with the installing more stuff on a crippled system.
A factory reset on a spare disk would just assure us that the duo platform is fully operational. It wouldn't fix anything on your real disks.
You can also try to look at disk 1 in a PC (using linux reader from http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/) If the data is there, you can pull it off in Windows, and then rebuild the duo/restore from backup. Remember that the NAS will wipe disks that you insert when it is powered up, so make sure you don't hot-insert your operational drives.
