Readynas Duo V1 (rnd2150) Interesting boot failure...
Greetings. I'm stumped, and cannot seem to find anyone who's encountered this particular boot behavior.
As the subject says, I have a duo that I purchased in 2008 or 2009 that's been running flawlessly since then. UPSs are wonderful things as far as the reliability of your hardware's concerned. Same 1TB disks (on the supported list) that I've had for five years now.
Unfortunately, my 1 year old son found the neat lit up power switch in the UPS the other day.
I assumed that letting the duo do it's own damage recovery after that would fix things, but I came back the next morning and it still wasn't repaired.
Now when I unplug the unit, all I get is the flashing blue power for approximately 5 seconds, and then the drive 1 green led stays on. That's it.
Same behavior removing each of the drives and trying to boot them alone, or removing all drives. Moment of blue flashing, then the single green led for drive 1. I've also tried the five second paperclip reset on the back. Same results.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDo you need to recover data, or just bring the device back to life? I am assuming the latter...
First try putting the original disks back (in slot order if you know it) with the duo powered down, and then power it up. Check the status with RAIDar, and see what it says.
If you aren't sure of the slot order, you can try powering down again, and swapping the disks.
If that gives no information, try deleting the partitions on one of the drives on your PC. Then put that drive (by itself) in slot 1, and power up the NAS. That should force a factory reset. Of course that loses your data (and config). - spillAspirantActually the former would be better. Losing five years worth of pictures of my now five year old would be a hard pill to swallow.
I need to reinstall RAIDar and see if there's any useful info available. As far as swapping the disks around, I've done that as well. All permutations up to and including powering it on with no disks in it at all. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt won't boot without disks.
Even though neither the disk order seemed to work, RAIDar might possibly give you different reports.
BTW, did you ever plug in the drives with the NAS running? If so, you might have destroyed your data.
BTW2, there is a freeware PC package that you could use to attempt to recover your data here: http://www.r-tt.com/free_linux_recovery/ There is some more information here: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306 - spillAspirantLooks like I'm going to try the BTW2 option. RAIDar doesn't communicate with the enclosure at all, so first priority is trying to retrieve the data, and then I'll worry about seeing if a firmware upgrade will resuscitate the nas. If the filesystem' standards EXT3, I think I can find a way to give it a shot.... hopefully with an external SATA drive cradle I have.

Edit: Stephen already linked to this above. - spillAspirantThanks for the link. I'm using the free r-linux backup utility for my first try. Drive mounted successfully in r-linux through a vantec external e-SATA caddy I had. I assume you have to run a scan before anything's going to be readable from the file system. First drive I've tried mounted and spooled up with no issue, and the scan's running. Fortunately I found a spare 1.5T drive to pull everything off onto.
Really hope the duo hasn't completely died on me. It's been perfectly reliable up until this point. Five years is a pretty good run. - spillAspirantSo I've managed to at least save my data from the disk. Now I'm trying to figure out what the deal with the duo is. Still the same "three seconds of blue power light followed by that turning off for good, and then only the first drive green led staying on without any blinking whatsoever" routine that's happened since the unit first failed.... regardless of whether both drives are in/one drive is in (either side), or no drives are in it. As an aside, I've read that the nas should boot and post a "no drives found" status to RAIDar, but mine doesn't even do that.
Since I'm so far out of warranty, I'm taking it apart to try and replace the internal 2032 battery. Considering it's > 5 years old, maybe that has something to do with it. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou could also attempt a USB recovery (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... h_device?s[]=usb)
It's risky, but you don't have many options. - spillAspirantJust to post back after the fact.....
I've tried everything to get the duo back up and running, including replacing the CR2032 and attempting a USB flash, but nothing works. I still get the same behavior: no blue light, and only the second green led for drive two lit after hitting the power button. At this point, I'm calling it quits I suppose. Since this is a v1 duo, I'm completely out of warranty. I was able to successfully reclaim my data fortunately, so at least I know the drives weren't the issue. I'm puzzled as to why an abrupt loss of power would cause the system to completely fail like this (and that is all that happened.... the UPS it was plugged into was switched completely off). At this point though, and even though the prices on the duo v2's are outstanding because of the new hardware and os6 options being released immediately, I can't see myself wanting to risk everything again on a similar unit.
Thanks to everyone for the posts that gave me options to try.
