ReadyNAS Duo V2 - Few Questions

Hi everyone

I've had the DUO V2 since it first came out last year. I've just recently installed the latest beta firmware and I'm very impressed. Seem a massive leap forward has finally been made and it's now looking more like it was meant to rather than a glorified external hard drive.

I've just got a couple of questions that I still can't grasp.

1) Easy one this. This website seems to have neglected the V2 series of these devices. Either I'm looking in the wrong place or my thoughts are true. For example, you goto the addon section but there are non for the arm based V2 devices. Yet I know there is the iPHone Remote app, SSH app, etc available.

2) I'm using both Mac OSX Lion and Windows 7 pcs to store and access data on the DUO V2. I'm still unsure what protocol I should use when using my Macbook. AFP or CIFS? I got into a right muddle with permissions and had to go in via SSH and sort this out as I was unable to access folders/files. With the latest beta the reset permission option is a god send.

3) I'm never tried to setup time machine which I would like to do but how does this work? Can I use time machine as well as DUO V2 in the normal way for file access/storage. My reason for sound thick is because if I connect an external drive and set it time machine up, it formats the drive and nothing else can use that drive.

Many thanks in advance.

    1) Not many add-ons available yet. With the beta firmware you only need to enable FTP and have ReadyNAS Remote installed to use it. I agree the section should be updated to include more ARM add-ons.

    2) AFP is the Apple Filing Protocol. In a mixed environment a number decide to use CIFS on both Mac and PC but it's really up to personal preference and what works for you.

    3) It's imitating a Time Capsule. When you setup Time Machine you assign a quota e.g. 500GB. Then up to 500GB can be used by Time Machine. You can still use the ReadyNAS to store other data. In fact if 100GB is used by Time Machine you could fill the rest with other data (though if there's no free space TM backups aren't going to work).
  • Thank you very much for your kind reply. That's helped clear my confusion.
