ReadyNAS Duo v2 Firmware upgrade
I've received an email from Netgear Support advising me to upgrade my Firmware to V4.2.28. My current Firmware is V4.1.14, which I thought was the latest. However, when I visit the Support Download...

Received the same -- or similar -- email. And the unit I have has a label on bottom stating that says "ReadyNAS Duo RND2110 v2." However, I just noticed that the "RND2110" portion is a stick-on label covering "RND2000" and the "v2" is part of the original label. The white label with barcode lists "Model: RND2110-100NAS" ...
I have spent over 2 hours on this. What a waste!
You have a v1 NAS - http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/
It's been EOL for quite some time, though Netgear has provided some security updates. Based on the email, it's looking like they won't do that any more.
Though my duo v1 (and my NV+ v1) are both working fine, and I have no plans to take them out of service. Similarly for my pro-6.

You are right, what a complete waste of time this "rogue" e-mail caused. A couple of follow-up thoughts though ....
The (deliberate?) mis-labelling begs the question, was I conned when I bought the device new, i.e. knowingly sold an obsolete v1, labelled as a v2, when in fact I thought I was buying the latest version? IMO, at best, sharp practice, at worst, fraud.
I prefer not to run kit that is no longer supported so it was a surprise to learn that this device had been EOL'd "some years back". I will now be looking to replace my Netgear NAS. Needless to say, after this episode, it will not be with another Netgear.

The labeling on the back is confusing, there is more info here: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/ Personally I think the v2 branding was a brain-dead decision, but I don't think it was intended to mislead. One way or another, the confusion goes back to 2011 (when the v2 was launched).
The v1 platforms became end-of-life in 2012 (shortly after the v2 launch). I don't know when you purchased, but if it was after Q4 2011 you were buying old distributor inventory. Firmware updates were provided anyway (as you probably know) with some bug fixes and security patches. I am thinking (based on the 4.2.x email) that there won't be any more 4.1.x updates either.
OS6 was announced in January 2013, so there has been a 2 year overlap for the 4.2.xx owners. These products are all marked as "legacy" on the hardware compatibility lists, and manufacturing stopped when the OS6 platforms were launched. So the EOL status isn't surprising. The decision to stop providing security updates for products still covered by warranty is surprising (and in my opinion wrong). The right time to drop 4.2.x firmware updates would have been 2018.
End-of-Life of course doesn't affect warranty status, and doesn't mean support is unavailable.
