There are 2 issues here: your mode of connection (ethernet or usb3); and the file protocol you use (cifs or nfs usually)
If the data is on your LAN, setup a backup task to pull the data to the relevant share using cifs or nfs. Here you would probably be using gigabit ethernet as your connection.
If it's on a USB drive then clearly USB 3 (or 2) would be your only option, but you can still set up a backup task to pull the data using one of those protocols. Make sure you don't let the NAS format your USB drive!
