ReadyNAS Firmware Upgrade
For the first time in a long time, I logged into the Frontpanel of my ReadyNAS NV (yes, not NV+) today and for the heck of it checked for firmware upgrades. To my great surprise, it told me that a very recent new update to 4.1.12 is available. I last updated my ReadyNAS probably 3+ years ago, it's running firmware 4.1.6.
I did some research and downloaded all firmware updates and release notes from 4.1.6 onwards, but now I'm a bit confused. The last release that explicitly mentions support for the NV is 4.1.9, while 4.1.10 onward only mention NV+. But then, the 4.1.11 Beta release mentions support for NV and all the fixes in it seem to have been rolled into 4.1.12 (seems 4.1.11 was never released?)
I have three questions:
(1) Does firmware release 4.1.12 support ReadyNAS NV (or, if not officially support, at least work on it)? If not, what is the latest firmware release that works on ReadyNAS NV?
(2) When upgrading from my running firmware 4.1.6, can I directly upgrade to 4.1.12 (or 4.1.9, as the case may be) or do I have to upgrade one minor revision level at a time, 4.1.6 -> 4.1.7 -> ... -> 4.1.12 ?
(3) Is upgrading the firmware transparent to the data on the disks or does it wipe the disks?
Sorry if these are all FAQs, but I haven't been able to find answers to these questions. Also, the last time I upgraded my firmware was from 3.something to 4.1.6 and at the same time I installed a new set of disks (4 x WD Caviar Black 1 TB), so it was clear data would be lost.
I'm hoping I could upgrade to the latest firmware as it has a bunch of fixes that would be good to have.
Thanks,
Thomas

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1) Yes it works. The NV+ (v1) is the NV with a few evolutionary improvements. The production firmware Release Notes currently only mention the models NetGear sold but users have found it still works fine on the Infrant models.
2) Updating direct should be fine
3) Data remains intact - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserData remains intact, but I would make sure I had an up-to-date backup before upgrading the firmware or replacing disks.
- pivotalAspirantFirst time poster - have a ReadyNas that reads Model: RND2210-100NAS. It's a 2X1TB. Can't remember when originally I started having problems but over time have come to use usb image boots and os re-install to try to work through with mixed results.
In any case, here's my current situation:
Unable to get 4.1.10 to work earlier this year (unending booting and such), I had rolled back to 4.1.8 with Raidar 4.3.4 - where only the "browse" feature (and windows explorer) have been working (even before attempting 4.1.10). "Setup" would present (after login) a mangled un-usable frontview homepage. So have lived without admin capabilities for a while.
Hoping 4.1.12 might address, did a usb install of the boot image followed by an os reinstall. All I see now is a slow blinking blue and a steady pair of greens. Raidar (4.3.4) does not even see it (locally connected for now), so effectively inaccessible.
I have windows 8 and IE10 (tried Chrome as well).
Two questions come to mind:
Should I again go back to 4.1.8? what's up with Frontview even with 4.1.8? Thanks. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredBoot Recovery really is a last resort. I don't think you should have tried that.
Did you ever try clearing your web browser cache (e.g. Temporary Internet Files in IE)? - pivotalAspirantUSB boot recovery has been the only thing that worked for me when all else failed (I confess to not seeking support).
I do recall having cleared my browser but am willing to revisit (again possibly under 4.1.8 if no other recourse). Thanks. - pivotalAspirantSorry - I am running Raidar 4.3.8 (and not 4.3.4).
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIE10 compatibility is fixed in 4.1.13 beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222
- pivotalAspirantJust rolled back to 4.1.8 - Raidar is able to see local ReadyNAS again, cleared browser and attempted "setup". Login begets a mangled home page as before.
Bit of a catch-22 here - in the absence of a usable frontview, only option I know of to upgrade raidiator firmware is via USB boot image. Not sure there is one out there for 4.1.13(beta).
Going in, I tend to be optimistic about 4.1.13 (by the same token, I have not read anyone else having such browser issues - so proof in the pudding I guess). Thanks. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat language is your web browser set to use?
After downgrading to 4.1.8 did you clear your web browser cache? - pivotalAspirantYes - did try clearing the browser to no avail right after downgrade (or restore, rather) to 4.1.8 (which is when ReadyNAS became visible again to Raidar). US English as browser language. Thanks.
