ReadyNas NV+ 1.0 always has been very slow

As I mentioned above Rsync is CPU intensive. You're not going to get those speeds using Rsync. You're expectations are unreasonable for the NV+ (v1). Also as Rsync only copies the changes to files across (not the whole file again) Rsync is a lot faster than the MB/sec numbers would suggest.
Try a backup using NFS and report what speeds you get.
Also if you have the "Disable Journaling" option checked under System > Performance you should have the NAS power connected to a UPS with a USB cable connected between the NAS and the UPS as well so that the NAS will shutdown safely in the event of a power failure.
