ReadyNAS NV+ Disk Failure

Hi,

My ReadyNAS NV+ stopped working a few days ago, and one of the drives was making a beeping/clicking noise, so I tried restarting it. It wouldn't boot up unless I took out Disk 2 (which also stopped the clicking/beeping), and on checking Frontview, it was showing errors in the logs against Disk 2 and Disk 3, and the RAID volume is unavailable.

There's nothing listed in the RAID disk list, and the list of available disks is showing Disk 1 with 0MB available, Disk 2 as non-existent (because I removed it), Disk 3 as 1860GB free, and Disk 4 as 0MB available.

I've since replaced Disk 2 with a new disk, and it boots up fine, but the volume is still unavailable.

Is there any way to try to recover the volume that was there before - I had heard (via the ReadyNAS community) that support was able to remote into the box to see if there was anything they can do.

Please help!! :)

Thanks,

Tim

  • That does not sound very good.

I'll assume you have no backup, so your best course of action is to contact Netgear support who will charge you to look at what can be done.  It is possible that your data is lost.

    Hello tjspenc0,

It does appear you have 2 or more fault disks. You must be using XRAID with RAID5 which only allows 1 disk fault. Please contact support center asap if you do not full backup of the data.

Also, ReadyNAS NV+ is a discontinued unit and most probably your NAS no longer have support warranty. You may need to purchase support contract and/or data recovery from them. Still depends on the warranty status of the NAS you have but I think that is data recovery.

    Regards,

  • I have a very simlar problem and tried getting techinical support from Netgear who wouldn't offer support on second hand devices even if you pay for it.

I have tired a simlar thing on my ReadyNas NV+ when i remove disk 2 the unit boot up, with Disk 1 showing 900mb free, Disk 2 unavailable due it being removed, Disk 3 showing 0mb free and Disk 4 showing 900mb free

Can anyone help as i really need to obtain the data.

Can you provide a bit more information on anything that might have triggered this?  Also is the NAS running xraid or flexraid?

Likely you need a data recovery service (or purchase raid recovery software).  As you note, Netgear won't provide it since your unit is used.  However, Seagate does offer data recovery, and Western Digital lists some partners on their web site that offer it.

      http://www.seagate.com/services-software/seagate-recovery-services/

      http://support.wdc.com/Warranty/dataRecovery.aspx

Be careful to check reviews if you go with a different service.
