ReadyNAS NV recovery questions?

I have had a NV for years and it recently went inaccessible. The NV has two 1TB Segate Barracuda drives installed.

When I reboot, the NV hangs up with the power light pulsing, activity light off, and drive lights for bays 1 and 2 on. Every 30s or so, the power light will stop pulsing, and the activity light will pulse. After a second, the activity light goes back off and the power light resumes pulsing. The NV isn't accessible from the web at this point.

After a few reboots to try to get it back, I pulled the drives and tested them in USB enclosures with SeaTools. The bay #1 drive fails the "short generic" test while the bay #2 drive passes. So, I am assuming the bad drive is probably responsible and I need to replace drive(s). I have a backup, but it's a bit stale, so I'd rather not just factory default and restore. I think I know what I need to do next, but I want to double-check with the community.

1) Restart the NV with only the bay #2 drive in place (if the NV comes back, issue was just the bad drive)
2) Backup to an external USB drive (to be safe)
3) Hot-plug a new drive in bay #1, let the NV grind away and rebuild the RAID.
4) Power down the NV and replace the drive in bay #2
5) Reboot the NV and let it grind away to rebuild the RAID.

I assume that the NV will run with only one drive installed (assuming the one drive is good), though it is certainly not redundant in that configuration. Also, I assume it would be OK to replace the drives with larger drives.

Appreciate the help.

  • Trying to boot with drive 2 is a reasonable first step.
If it is the drive then first backup your data.
Hot add new drive to bay 1
    Allow resync
Hot swap drive in bay 2 with new good drive if you want to - I assume you are planning to increase size of drives. All long as the first one you put in is the same size or smaller than the second one you will be ok.

    Post outcome.
  • Looks like I'm in business. NV came back up with just drive #2. Everything looks to be where I left it. Backing up now and will then shutdown just to be safe until the new drives get here next week.

One other question, does the latest SPARC firmware (4.1.13) run on the NV? I can't seem to find NV in the support area---NV+ (v1) seems to be the oldest system listed (thought the v1 NV+ was pretty much the same as the NV).

    Thanks for the help!
