ReadyNAS NV+ (sparc) disk issue ...
This is a unique (I think) problem and would appreciate some guidance.
My NAS (bought about 5 years ago - only issue so far has been the power supply ... replaced it myself) has four each 1 TB disks, and I've been slowly (just started) replacing them (when the price is good / on sale) w/ 2 TB disks (the largest SPARC will support). I usually power down the unit, replace the disk, and power it up. In about 12-14 hours, the new disk is ready. No issues on the first disk (position 3).
Disk two (a Seagate on the approved list ... in position 4) I just bought and installed ... and for the first 4 days, no issues. Then, the disk died (infant failure I assume), so I had to RMA it back (newegg ... no hastle). So I figured to maintain stability, I'd put the old 1 TB disk back in for the 2 weeks it will take to get the replacement. Well, when I did that, the system got stuck in a "Disk 4 sync ..." loop ... and after 36 hours, I decided to pull power (only way to get it to turn off). The forums suggested that a hot swap is better, so I pulled disk 4 and re-powered it ... came on line no issues. So then I installed disk 4 and all the proper ALERTS occurred, but and it's back into the "Disk 4 sync ..." loop (but so far only for about 8 hours).
So my questions are:
1) do you think the sync will ever complete?
2) because the disk was the old one, is it maybe confused because it's looks like a valid disk? Maybe I should have re-formatted it before installing.
3) when done, I should have ~6TB of space ... any issues with that much storage? (I should be at the latest firmware level ... the NAS always checks to ensure it's current).
Thoughts and suggestions appreciated ...

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt is not a good idea to put a smaller capacity disk back in after inserting a larger capacity one.
1) No
3) Which would be about ~5.4 TiB. What firmware did you last do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) on? What brand and model 2TB disks have you got? - tpgAspirantWhy is it "not a good idea"? ... not arguing, but I thought that the old SPARC units would only use the space of the smallest disk, so it would not matter if I went from a 2TB to a 1TB since it already has two each 1TB disks. Could you elaborate please?
Well, based on you saying NO to Q1, I pulled power and re-booted. It came up with disks 1, 2, and 3 installed, but it's running ... and of course it did a quota check ... no issues. Bringing up the dashboard, V4.1.13 and

You can see that disk 4 is confused. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredOnce you put a larger capacity disk in a bay you cannot go back to a smaller one, I think.
