ReadyNas NV+ v2 5.3.9 SLOWWWW
My ready NAS has never been considered "fast" (max 25mb when copying from the drive). It's got 4 Seagate 3TB 7200rpm / 64mb cache drives in it, GBit connection, etc ...Yesterday wife went to use it for streaming media and it couldn't connect. I checked the display on the NAS and it showed Spinning Down...after 15min of waiting (RAIDar wouldn't find it, couldn't ping it, and I had no idea how long it had been in spinning down status) I just pulled the power and rebooted it.
I decided to update the firmware while I was down there to 5.3.9, this morning I tried to copy something from the nas to my external USB3 drive (through my computer's USB3 port) and the most I could get was 300k.
Now after upgrading to 5.3.9 I noticed the display shows C: Unprotected, but no amount of google-fu tells me what that actually means. I see it mentioned in other posts, but nothing specifically addressing it.

- vandermerweMasterIt sounds like a disk may have failed.
What does the volume page tell you about the disks.
Have you looked at the disk smart data? - I've gotten emails that I read as failure may be imminent, but when I check the dashboard and the RAIDar it shows Green lights for all drives. I just posted on the drive compatibility form about replacing with a WD Red 4TB drive that was mentioned on the HCL.
- vandermerweMasterDid the emails refer to a specific drive number?
Have you looked at the smart data for each drive. - ATA error count has increased in the last day.
Disk 2:
Previous count: 578
Current count: 1094
Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk. - vandermerweMasterThose are very high counts.
Generally advised to replace when count reaches 50.
Do you have a new disk to put in now?
Do you have a backup? - lmao, backups... that's funny :) *ahem* Sorry, no, no backups, it was my backup solution, but there's 4 x 3TB drives in there, and quite a bit is used (700g free out of 6.1tb), sooo no place to back up to, and now it's so slow I can't copy off it. I'm going on lunch to buy a new drive. I when I left this morning, I rebooted the NAS and did a file system check.
I never got any emails about drive problems until yesterday when I rebooted the NAS from the spinning down, otherwise it's just kind of sitting there. - vandermerweMasterWhen you have it, hot remove the bad disk 2, wait a while or until you receive a disk removed message ( few minutes), then insert the new disk while the NAS is still on.
- thank you for all your help, I got the drive in and the volume rebuilt w/o a hitch, and all my apps are working as expected now. Except one thing..
I can write to the drive now about 25-27mb / sec, but my reads from it are still 300k / sec. any idea what's going on or how I can get an idea of the bottle neck? - vandermerweMasterIs that still copying through your PC to a usb3 drive.
What is the read speed if you copy straight to your PC?
Have you checked the other drives. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTesting with a direct connect to the PC is be a good idea.
What router/switches are on the path between the NAS and the PC?
