ReadyNAS NV+ V2 doesn't accept "admin" password.

Hi All,

NAS has been sat there doing it's job for ages, exactly one year and one day to be precise. Decided to log in today to generally have a look around at space remaining and log entries etc and found I couldn't log in. It would not accept the "admin" account password. I thought I'd got it wrong and tried every different one I could think of, or found recorded - nada. It wasn't having any of it. After a minor panic, thinking I'd maybe been hacked, I researched the Netgear website and decided, after finding I hadn't set up the "Password Recovery" section, to perform an "OS Re-install" Boot. Well I obviously did something wrong because it just plain booted, complaining in the process that it wanted to "re-sync disk two". (It's my experience that, despite the best efforts (and they have been very good!) of Netgear Tech Support, it does this more often than not after a reboot).

Anyway whilst it was starting on the re-sync I thought I'd try logging in, on the off-chance that the reboot had fixed it, and guess what, it works. I can now log in to the "admin" account using the password I thought it was all along.

There's obviously some MS input in the O/S but there you go; if in doubt, just try a reboot on the offchance. Oh and before anyone chastises me for not updating to the latest firmware 5v3.12, I'm about to, just as soon as the resync has finished.

  • You download the logs from the web ui.

The guide here shows how to do it for "Raidiator 5" - which is what you are using.  http://kb.netgear.com/25625/How-do-I-send-ReadyNAS-system-logs-to-NETGEAR-Support?cid=wmt_netgear_organic

Note no one is requesting your logs, so don't send them in.

I don't own a v2, but likely you will see something like smart_history.log in the zip file.  mdstat.log will likely also be there, and on other systems includes reallocated sectors, etc.

There is a netgear add-on you'd need to install to enable ssh. Once installed, the username is "root" and the password is the NAS admin password. Telnet is normally only available if you are booting in tech support mode.

I'm glad you are back in.  I do suggest checking the logs (particularly the SMART stats/disk health).  I suspect the resync was needed because you needed to pull the plug to shut it down, but it would be prudent to check health anyway.

Also, if email alerts aren't set it, you might want to take care of that after you upgrade the firmware.

Thanks for the prompt reply. How do I check the the SMART stats/disk health logs please? I've tried SSH and Telnet to the NAS but it refuses my connection. Also I didn't need to pull the plug to shut it down, I just used the front "power" button to tell it to shut down gracefully. Apart from that it was working perfectly.
