After updating to 5.3.5 (or later) you need to change the admin password once regardless of whether you've changed it on prior firmware or not. Then you can access the shares as the "admin" user.
Leaving the password as default is not a good idea for security reasons which is one reason why admin access to shares via CIFS isn't granted till the admin password is changed at least once.
