ReadyNAS OS 6.1.5 RN104 Performance
Hey Guys,
I've had a ReadyNAS 104 for nearly a month now, and have been lurking and reading through these forums for several weeks... I started with 1 disk, then added 2 more, (now totaling 3 x 3 TB drives), it mirrored and then striped the disks, My performance isn't all too great, Read is fine at around 80-90 MB/sec on accessing large video files, but write is about 40 MB/sec, I'm guessing due to CPU limitations on calculating Parity data.
I noticed with the latest firmware it says "Improved performance with large volumes (Most likely seen on the ReadyNAS 104). A factory default is required to make the changes. Copy all data off the ReadyNAS, upgrade the firmware, factory default the unit, and copy all data back onto the device"
I'm just wondering if its worth the hassle of taking all my files off (currently about 40% full) installing/factory defaulting it, then dumping the data back on... As if the performance is about the same, I'm just going to say forget the hassle of a factory reset... Now if write performance improves a fair bit, to say 50-60 MB/sec or greater, then it would be completely worth my time. I use it for backing up 2 computers, and as a Media Storage Device for streaming DVD and Bluray rips to my HTPC, so mainly the biggest thing to pull off would be 800GB+ Movies, Default it, then re-do my computer backups and move the media back.
Just curious if anyone has done the update and factory default already yet or not and have seen a nice improvement on performance? If its negligible, I don't want to waste the several hours of time doing all this only to find out I get a couple extra MB/sec...
Thanks :)

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf your volume gets full you will likely see performance issues. The changes in 6.1.5 are designed to alleviate these issues somewhat but a factory default is needed if you want to take advantage of the changes.
- zach86AspirantOh okay, I knew it changes the block size from 4096 to 32,768, and am going to do it just so its done and taken care of sooner rather than later. Just awaiting it to backup my Media to a borrowed external drive. :)
Thanks for your response! - YeahhAspirantI just spent the last couple of days moving all of my data off of my RN104 to an old NV+ in order to perform this FW upgrade. What a pain in the *ss. I cant say I've seen a performance increase with the new firmware (6.1.5). In fact my old NV+ seems to be performing better. It also appears to have much more stable read/write speeds...take a look at the numbers below from NAS Tester 1.5. Any advice on how to increase performance on the RN104? Currently the anti virus is turned off, also turned off is continuous protection. Only using SMB & AFP right now. After the FW upgrade I started to copy files back to the RN104 from the NV+, windows explorer was reporting anywhere from 14-27 MB/sec. Not sure how accurate that is...it seemed to be with the number of files and how long it took to complete the copy. But according to the NAS tester I'm seeing numbers way below that.
Current Setup
gigabit router
gigabit switch
Laptop (win7 pro) hard wired directly to router, also gigabit
Both NAS systems are hard wired directly to the switch. The laptop is plugged directly into the router.

Yeahh - if you'd like more help on isolating this, it might be best if you start a new thread. - YeahhAspirantI'll try moving the laptop directly to the switch. But I dont think that will do anything. If that was the problem, you would think I'd get similar results with the NV+ and the RN104. But the two are completely different...not even close. I'll continue to tinker with it and maybe start a new post. Thanks!
- YeahhAspirantI tried connecting the laptop directly to the switch instead of the router...no change. Performance actually went down a little if anything.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf 802.3x flow control enabled on the PC NIC? Also, are jumbo frames disabled?
- YeahhAspirantYes & Yes
