With new disks you'd need to do a factory default, not an OS reinstall. If the disks are unformatted that should happen automatically.
Can you test the new Ultrastar in a PC (perhaps using a USB adapter)? Not sure what diagnostic software to use, but perhaps try WD's Lifeguard.

I've tried the factory default too, but it didn't help. Will check the disks, yes.
EDIT: looks like I can telnet into the device, but neither my last valid password nor the factory one (netgear1) are accepted.

Thanks for the link! Will do that, although it'd be very unexpected that both brand new disks are faulty.
Actually, shouldn't RAIDar detect the device even with no disk inserted?

Ok, I've tested the disk with WinDFT: all good.
As for the warranty, I'm of course just 6 months out of the 5 years. ;-)
Time to order a new NAS...
