ReadyNAS Pro 2 doesn't detect new disk
Hi all, My good ol' ReadyNAS Pro 2 just indicated a few days ago that disk #2 had failed (Hitachi HDS722020ALA330 1863 GB). I've replaced it (hot-swapped) with a similar one, a brand new Hitachi ...

Does the original disk in slot-1 boot (with slot 2 empty)?

Since I couldn't afford to lose too much time on this, I bought a replacement (Synology DS216+II) and put the ReadyNAS on the side of both my desk and my thoughts.
But since you asked, I gave it another try, just to be sure. And... can't believe it. First, it booted perfectly with the original #1 disk, and I could access it via web-interface. Then I (hot) inserted #2 (which had been marked as dead), and... and it's now re-syncing!...
I don't know what happened during that time, I only had the ReadyNAS sitting (completely unplugged) on my desk. Did it just need a bit of rest after 5+ years of uninterrupted service?... Puzzling...

Et voilà. A few hours later, the #2 disk has been synced, and all's green and normal again.
Now I just have to find a use for this device again... Backup of the backup's backup? ;-)

Well you are in an ideal situation to upgrade your Pro 2 to the latest OS 6 Firmware, which has many more features
Backup before doing any of this as everything will be deleted including settings
- First upgrade your Firmware to 4.2.30
- Next update your Bios by uploading this file to your NAS http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin
- Download PREP4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin
- Upload it using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update, but do not reboot afterwards (avoids the need to do manual factory resets)
- Download R4toR6_latest.bin
- Upload it using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
- After you upload the addon/firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default.

Wow, thanks for the detailed description! I've just done it, and all's green. What a difference!
