if you left ssh open its very likely the readynas itself was brute-forced into, or some priviledge escalation exploit as chirpa suggested.
I once had my pro hacked/rooted and found it making connections to russia and other strange countries.
This is a perfect case where a 'factory default without losing data' would come in handy.
In any case, I would definately ensure you have backups and triple checked it for any corrupted or compromised files, then do a boot menu factory default.
