ReadyNAS Pro On life support.

THANK YOU!! for any HELP.

1. ReadyNAS PRO pioner. with 5 HD.
2. 2 days ago I got a disk fail error and I shout down the system and reboot after inserting new HD @ bay 2. (the bad one was 1.5T and I replace it with 2T)
3. got a message: "Data volume will be rebuilt with disk 2."
4. waited overnight.. than:
5. message: 'Rsync complete OK" & after a some time: "Newly added drive has more space to expand the volume, will start volume expansion"
6. after 6-9 hours: "RAID sync finished on volume C. The array is still in degraded mode, however. This can be caused by a disk sync failure or failed disks in a multi-parity disk array."
7. so I powered the NAS off and on again..
8. the system start a resync for about 5 hours and then after i got:"Volume scan found and corrected errors" & "System is up."
9. The NEW #2 disk now has a little cross inside the green status indicator and it show as SPARE..!!
10. #4 disk now has indication of DEAD.
11. system status: RAID sync finished on volume C. The array is still in degraded mode, however. This can be caused by a disk sync failure or failed disks in a multi-parity disk array..
12. I turn off the NAS
13. current status: the NAS is on "On life support" withe a SMALL CROSS NEAR place of the green dot for THE NEW DISK 2.
AND disk 4 report as DEAD.

Should I replace also disk 4 or it will take the all array out of balance ??

  • Work with support on the issue. Don't start doing stuff at the advice of others on the forum while support will be trying things, could make stuff worse.

I totally agree. If you start doing stuff on your own you are likely to interfere with what they need to do. Swapping disks around, etc. is not a good idea.

However, if data on the NAS is accessible, you should update your backups. If the data is not available, I think you should just wait.

I have checked with the support agent on your case after I reviewed your logs.
It does look to be in a sad shape currently. Please put the ReadyNAS into Tech Support Mode and update the case with the 5 digit number that shows in RAIDar.

    Thanks!
  • Thank you!

We did extended check to each of the disks (about 15 Hours each) and it's look like Disk no #4 has FAIL..
This happen during the expansion of the raid (I replace a failed disk #2 with a bigger one..) the initial re sync was finished (I got a system email) but cause of the bigger disk (2T instead of the failed 1.5T) the raid start to expend.. at this time, after about 3-4 hours from the start of the expend disk no #4 gone bad.. and I got the "On life support" message.

    Any ideas ?

    THANK YOU.
