When the firmware on the internal flash is corrupt then you can get errors like the error you got or the NAS may hang while booting or run but with some services missing. This problem is usually only seen when you do a factory default as when you do a firmware update or OS Re-install the NAS can fall back to taking advantage of the copy of the firmware on the internal disks.
