Readynas Ultra 2 HDD upgrade
Hi,
I've got two 2TB drives running in raid 1 on my ReadyNAS Ultra 2. They are both the same make, WD Caviar Green. I've done some reading and realised that it would probably be better to upgrade to the WD Caviar Red for the NAS storage, so I've ordered a 3TB one.
With that in mind, I've got two questions:
- First of all, how do I do the upgrade? Do I just remove one of the drives and replace with the new one? Would it rebuild automatically?
- Secondly, as my current drives are 2TB, once I replace both of the original drives with 3TB counterparts, I am assuming the capacity would still be 2TB. Is that correct? If so, is there any simple way to expand the volume to use the capacity?
Thanks!

2) Yes. assuming you are using X-RAID2 it would be automatic. You may need to reboot once or twice before expansion takes place.
Do make sure you are running RAIDiator 4.2.16 or later before installing a 3TB disk. - zard1AspirantThank you very much!

I've checked and I've got RAIDiator 4.2.19, should be ok there. However, I am probably using standard raid 1: - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could create a new volume D after adding one or more 3TB disks.
- zard1AspirantOk, that sounds like a plan.. do not want to copy everything anywhere else.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou should not entrust data you are not prepared to lose to a single device. See Preventing Catastrophic Data Loss

Absolutely - my idea would be to remove both of the HDDs, mount them on a linux box and let readynas initialise the new drive, then copy everything over. I also have everything backed up using CrashPlan but that would be very painful process to restore.
Thank you very much for all your comments!
By the way, any first-hand experience with the drives optimised for NAS storage? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI have 6x3TB disks in use in my main NAS, an Ultra 6.
