Save the change, restart ZoomBrowserEx, see if network drive magically no longer protected.
Bump for a "WOW!!"... I was having the same problem (images on ReadyNAS were marked as "protected" when viewed from ZoomBrowser), and this fixed the problem in less than a minute! Fantastic!
