ReadyNASNV-How to get CIFS working?

I recently had the same problem: while one machine on my home network couldn't make a CIFS connection to the ReadyNAS, others could. However, the problem machine could ping, use FTP, and make HTTP connections with the ReadyNAS.
I looked at the firewall--even uninstalled it out of desperation--but with no luck.
This happened after a recent electrical storm; the problem machine was working fine before the storm and I had cleanly shut down and unplugged everything while the storm passed. I was thinking maybe some hardware got damaged before or because of the shutdown.
However, the answer turned out to be simpler than that: somehow the problem machine lost the "Client for Microsoft Networks" protocol. The answer was to reinstall the protocol and everything worked like it should.
I figured this might help out future generations trying to puzzle through Windows networking issues.
