Replacement for RN424

I have been using an RN424 (with 3 drives in RAID configuration) for years. It seems that since FW and security updates are discontinues, it is time for me to look for a replacement NAS. I would appreciate any recommendations for an replacement unit.

thanks

  • I am considering the Western Digital Red (Plus or Pro) 6TB or 8TB drives.

On the size, I suggest pricing out a couple of options.  Fewer but larger drives are often cheaper in the long run, especially if they leave empty bays for future expansion.

For example, I am seeing 6 TB Red Plus for about $170 each, 10 TB for $220 each, and 12 TB for $270 each

      • 4x6TB would give 18 TB of storage for $680 - about $37/TB of storage
      • 3x10TB would give 20 TB of storage for $660 - about $32/TB
      • 3x12TB would give 24 TB of storage for $810 - about $33/TB

Expanding the 3 disk array just requires adding one more disk.  Expanding the 4 disk array (with a 4 bay NAS) requires replacing two working disks with two larger ones.

I am also seeing 12 TB Red Pro for the same price as Red Plus...

WD has their own storefront on Amazon, so you can purchase there (being careful to check the seller before checkout).

  • I am leaning towards an Asustor AS6804T. To this end, where is the best place to buy HDD's?

When I acquired the RN424 8 years ago, I bought the drives from Newegg, but today, they seem to only be a broker for other vendors, and for the drives in which I am interested, they seem to have multiple listings at very different prices from each other.

Not sure there is a "best place".  Often I've used Amazon (which also has multiple sellers).

What disks are you thinking about getting?

Usually I start with Ironwolf or WD Red Plus.  But I have one Exos in a NAS, and an Ultrastar currently in a PC (but which might end up in a NAS later on).

Often the larger sizes are only available in enterprise-class lines (so not regular Ironwolf or Red Plus).
