Resetting Admin Password on NV+v2

OK GUYS.

I just bought this ReadyNAS NV+v2 with 4 bays from E-Bay. Ive installed 2 WD Red Hard Drives each with 4Tb storage in slots 1 and 2. The seller of the NAS told me it had been factory reset but I havent figured out how to confirm this yet. The unit went through a boot sequence yesterday and performed a XRaid2 Synchronization on the drives. Ive downloaded and installed Raidar 6.1 and can browse the media and backup folders set up by the software/hardware/firmware. Sorry i dont know all the jargon !!

Now I can goto the admin page and it asks for the Username and Password. I couldnt seem to login using this so after reading the page on how to reset the password i entered my e-mail address, a security question and answer and clicked the recover button.

Now INITIALLY i thought it had not sent an e-mail to my e-mail address as after 5 mins it had not arrived. I refresed the page on yahoo and logged into yahoo again but still no recovery e-mail. So i tryed again ! To recover the Password using the password recovery page. Still nothing !

HOWEVER tonight ive started to get mail delivery failed e-mails in my inbox. I found a generic one which had been in my spam folder but i marked it as Not Spam and im now getting Email alerts from the NAS box. Its taking mybe up to or even over 24 hours though 0_0 This cant be right.

As yet ive written no data to the drives just in case i need to do a factory reset which I am hoping to avoid as the synchronizing time on two 4Tb drives is about 8 hours and i dont have time to waste on retrieving Data a second time unless I know its not going to require another Factory Reset.

So Where was I ? Im not really sure to be honest. I guess im looking for advice on how to reset teh Admin Password and to confirm if the username is also reset or does that remain as admin ?

Also how do i check if i have the factory default firmware ? Im concerned that it might hace a modified version allowing access through a backdoor to the previous owner. Ive no actual proof its just a paranoid concern, so id like to ensure I hard reset that I guess as well.

Finally Id like to know how and when should i go about updating the firmware as I wish to avoid any errors or bugs which may force a Factory Reset. This unit is critical to my work, or will be, I intend for it to be my primary backup and i will be using a Duo v2 as a daily backup which i will then backup to the NV+ on a weekly basis. Well that the plan.

So guys please tell me what to do EXACTLY. Ive got little experiance with this and am worried that im going to  make a mess of some procedure along the way if I dont have clear instructions !

Sorry for the loong post .

Hope you can help !

    Hello JohnDoe2016,

Since it is detected by RAIDar, it should show the current firmware version of the NAS. If the firmware version starts with 5.3.x, then that is a ReadyNAS NV=v2 ARM-based. If it starts with 4.1.x then that is a ReadyNAS NV+v1 Sparc-based. ARM based NAS units' default login is admin for username and password for password while Sparc-based is admin for username and netgear1 for password.

If you are still not able to get in and the disks are empty and no data, you may perform factory reset to get the NAS let allow you to start from scratch and build the volume for you. There is also another way, perform OS reinstall to reset the password to its default.

Please see boot menu of ARM-based ReadyNAS NV+ from this link and Sparc-based from this link

Checking for firmware updates is automatic once the NAS is installed, I believe you should get a prompt if an update is available for the NAS,

    Regards,

Ok so I have a few more questions regarding this.

So ive confirmed my firmware is 5.3.11 and therfore am using ReadyNAS NV+ v2 ARM based.

Am i correct in thinking ARM based is the CPU architecture ?

Next is 5.3.11 the default Firmware for this Nas unit as shipped from the factory ?

Can the firmware be hacked ?

If the firmware can be hacked how do I ensure it hasnt ?

How difficult / risky is it to reinstall the OS as im thinking this should be quicker than a Factory Reset as it would require a rebuild of the XRaid2 Array ? and that takes a long time so an OS install will solve my problem and be a lot faster ?

Sorry for all the questions but im moving lowly untill im sure I know what im doing.

Thanks again for all your help guys n gals.

Everything is saved on the disks.  So if you installed two new disks into the NAS, then the system did a factory install (which has the same effect as a factory reset).

You do have an ARM based NAS (running "OS 5").  5.3.12 is the current firmware for your NAS.

I think it very unlikely that the previous owner could have left a back door behind.  However, for peace of mind, I suggest you download 5.3.12 from here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30816  Extract the firmare image from the zip file and install it onto the NAS.  In addition to updating the disk firmware, that will also load 5.3.12 into the NAS flash memory.  Then do a factory reset from the web admin ui.

The procedure for updating the firmware is on page 63-65 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/READYNAS%20ARM-PLATFORM%20(DUO%20V2,%20NV+%20V2)/RAIDiator%205.3%20SW%20Manual_5Sep12.pdf

The factory reset procedure is in the hardware manual ( http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/ReadyNAS_Duov2_NV+v2_HW_en_23-Mar-12.pdf ) page 24-25.  It's called "factory default" in the manual.

Thanks stephen B. Since my initial query I have now done an OS Reinstall by pressing the Reset Button. I must say that the instruction both in the manual and in the article could have been worded a little better. It suggests you wait for the LED lights to blink etc but it wasnt untill i re read the instructions very carefully for the 3rd time that I realised that you only held the reset button UNTILL the boot menu appeared and then pressed the backup button to navigate before selecting the option by pressing and releasing the reset button again... This seems a little contrary to the page showing flashing leds on hard drives to indicate what boot option you had selected. Perhaps this is for the duo ! ? Anyway i got that part figured though im concerned my led's didnt flash so im wondering if theres damage to them or the control board.. So moving on

So i did the OS reinstall and it flashed the firmware but it allso seemed to connect to the server and install an addon which was a little spooky. I dont like technology doing anything i dont specifically ask it to however I completed the reinstall of the OS  and was using my old laptop in the room where the nas is situated and im damned if i could get access to the dashboard with the admin and password defaults which i now knew were correct. It sat there waiting for the nas 192.168.x.xx . Nothing Zip Nada. So i started to do some research concerning this and found others with Browser issues so i thought id try IE as I had been using firefox. Straight away IE got into the dashboard even though it was an older version while firfox is upto date !. Go figure. However a lot of the display was corrupt. Its like it wasnt handling CSS or some Java maybe. That would figure as i cant update to the latest java on the laptop as its still running XP as its not up to vista or win7. I like to keep xp about for the older apps anyway !

So i went onto a newer pc and straight away I got into the dashboard using firefox. Im curious to know what the incompatability could be and if theres anyway arround this as I would still like access to the dashboard using the laptop as its set up next to the NV+ and my main PC is on another floor ! I remember being critical to myself about the appearance of the config screen of an old netgear router DG v3 i think.  It WORKED however on any browser i used ! Perhaps this fancy GUI interface the Dashboard employs isn't such a good idea !!

So I now have full access, Im still on FW 5.3.11 and will update to 5.3.12 tomorrow now as its getting late here in Scotland but ive made progress and learned a lot about my NV+ in the process and now feel more confident in its operation so thats a blessing. Its not that its difficult once you have done it successfully for the first time its just daunting as you fear screwing it up and having to do a factory reset which takes an age. The unit is obviously legacy and without this community I know i would have struggled far more than I have with the issues ive encountered to date. Mostly user error I may add. Well I guess thats about all for one night folks. Thanks again for all your help and directions.

Do you know what it installed?  It shouldn't have installed an add-on (though it wouldn't have removed an add-on that was already there).

The duo and nv+ are both in the manual, and the boot-menu procedures are different (the duo has no LCD).

I don'know the details on what it is (and I don't own a v2 NAS so I have no way to check).  They do need to make changes in the UI from time to time to maintain browser compatibity, and it is quite possible that sometimes those changes break older versions.
