SMART+ stats for 4.2.x firmware: log into frontview, click "status" on lower left, then "health". You'll see a SMART+ button next to each drive. When you click on it, the stats appear in a pop-up. Reallocated sector count, pending sector count, and ATA error count are the most useful pieces of information.
The cheapest option I know of for backup is to use Crashplan. Their backup service will back up your full NAS to their cloud servers at $60 per year. However, you do need a good internet connection (and no data cap), and installing crashplan on the NAS requires ssh and some comfort level with running linux commands.
USB backup is probably the second cheapest.
Personally I keep 3 copies of everything locally (backing up my main NAS to other NAS), and use crashplan to supplement (since it provides disaster recovery).
