RN104 - Remove inactive volumes - affects all disks after hotswapping new disk #27453091
Hi,
Recently I had been receiving disc space warnings so I bought a new WD Red 6GB disc to replace a 2GB disc. I read that I could simply hotswap the disc while the NAS was running.
After replacing the disc I could not access the admin page but I left the nas running for a few days in case it was formatting and rebuilding my volumes. When this was not successful I hotswapped the old disc back into the nas and left it running for a few days.
Eventually, I turned off the power and restarted the nas. The nas will now boot up and I can connect to the admin page but I receive the error message 'Remove inactive volumes to use the disk. Disk #1,2,3,4.'.
In addition to this I've two volumes data-0 and data-1 which both have a red warning with the same error message. When I click on the settings icon the only options available to select are 'Balance' and 'Destroy'.
I've tried putting the new disc back in and it is active but I receive the above error message for the other discs. I'd appreciate any assistance to resolve the issue as I do not have a backup and am afraid of loosing my data.
Please find further info below: -
OS - 6.5.1
Radar diagnostics: -
- Disk 3 has 1 Current Pending Sector
Replacement discs: -
- Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 - disc being replaced
- Western Digital Red Pro 6GB - WD6002FFWX - replacement disc
Other discs: -
- SEAGATE Constellation 2GB - ST2000NM0033 x 2 discs

I've downloaded the log files but do not know how to upload them.

How many volumes did you have? The hot-swap replacement works with xraid. With flexraid, it works with some configurations but not all.
If you have a backup, you could do a factory reset and simply restore the data from the backup.
Otherwise, I suggest support for this (they probably can solve the inactive volume problem remotely). They likely will charge though.
Hi StephenB,
Thanks for the quick response, it's much appreciated. I'd one volume configured under xraid (raid 5 methinks).
I've no backup and don't want to lose any data so I'll contact support and will update this thread when I have further information.
Thanks, Stig
