RN104 disks (semi)randomly spinning up
Hi there, My RN104 disks (4x 3TB disk, RAID5) seem to randomly spin up multiple times a day and since I don't even access the NAS daily, I feel like this is a bit of a waste. Example: I accessed ...

Ok, so far so logical. But is there any way to make it do less writes? An hourly log seems a bit much to me. (Besides, it's supposed to be sleeping, what is it logging anyway?) I'd be more than fine with a daily, or better: weekly, log if it reduces the unnecessary disk spinups.

Is the ReadyNAS set up for hourly snapshots?

Nope, it's set up as basic as it gets: a simple raid5 used just for storage/backup.

Snapshots are independent of the RAID mode and are set up in the configuration for each share. You can set up how often they are taken and whether or not you want the disks spun up to take one.

Thanks, but I have no snapshots set up (that's why I said I only set up raid5, nothing more), although I went to check anyway and there was a snapshot created on july 20, 22:52 for data\home\admin (an empty folder). I have all shares set to 'snapshot management: smart' and 'snapshot schedule: never', though maybe the 'smart' implies it will take a snapshot of the home folder anyway sometimes..? Because that's smart..? But still, I can't imagine this smart setting taking so many snapshots it has to wake up the disks every 2 hours (and then only keep one snapshot).
Well, I set it to custom with schedule off for every evening/day. My guess is it won't change much, but we'll see. Any other suggestions are still welcome :)
