RN104 disks (semi)randomly spinning up
Hi there, My RN104 disks (4x 3TB disk, RAID5) seem to randomly spin up multiple times a day and since I don't even access the NAS daily, I feel like this is a bit of a waste. Example: I accessed ...

Small update: I removed the DNS entry on July 31st in the evening. Since then there have been a lot fewer spinups (disk 3+4 on Aug 1, disk4 on Aug 3, all disks this morning and disk 4 again twice in the afternoon). I still think any spinup when I'm not accessing the device is one too many (and I don't consider this case closed), but this is better than before, and I think I'm ok(-ish) with this.
One more (tiny?) thing, the system.log file contains a lot of "smbd[number]: pam_unix(samba:session): session closed for user guest" entries before. They have stopped since I denied the NAS internet access. I have no idea what those guest sessions are (and why there is no mention of a session opening). Are those guest sessions normal?

If your PCs don't have windows credentials set for the NAS, then they are likely using guest access.
Are you forwarding ports in the NAS in your router?

Late reply, but here's another small update for anyone who cares :)
The access to shares is anonymous, so no credentials for Windows. No ports are being forwarded to the NAS (so nothing from beyond the router should be able to access it).
Ever since I've removed the DNS entry there have been a lot fewer disk spinups. Still too many, imo (about 15 days in august, often multiplte times a day, but "only" 7 times in september and once so far this month), but something I can kind of live with (I mean, I kind of have to, since I have no idea what else to try and I'm tired of trying to find out what is causing it; I do know that my next NAS will probably not be a Neatgear).
Anyway, thanks for the replies, people. I consider this case 'closed but not solved'
