RN104 out of memory error out of the blue

Good morning Everyone,

I've a peculiar issue with my Readynas 104 - ReadyNASOS 6.5.1: Just after booting (less than 5 min online) throws an "Out Of Memory error +330" and hangs.

It's configured with 4x4tb seagate drives, one of them is slowly falling as the reallocated sector count is rising, but I don't think is related to the issue.

The only two apps I've installed are Transmission and Owncloud. The first is used, the second is not (empty and without clients syncing) and I've not installed or removed apps in the last few months.

I've tried to read the logs but I cannot find anyting strange and also checking top via ssh doesn't show any memory usage anomaly.

When turned on with volumes read-only stays online without issues. Reinstalling the OS via boot menu doesn't change anything.

There's something else I can check?

You can try turning off non-essential services (antivirus in particular).

The failing disk is perhaps related - it seems to me that queueing the pending writes in the NAS ram when a sector is being reallocated could increase the memory load.

Your firmware is quite dated, you might want to upgrade it to 6.9.0.

The antivirus feature is indeed off: I think I've never turned it on. The disk is failing since months, but the error arose only erarlier this week. I would upgrade, but I'll prefer to resolve the curren issue first: I don't thin it's good for the NAS to freeze in the middle of firmware upgrade.

I've not done any modification to applications and services in the last few months. It seems that some process went corrupted, but I cannot figure out wich one, and TOP, not the logs are helping me out.

Maybe wait a bit and see if someone from Netgear offers to analyze the logs.
