RN104 vs. RN314 for VM Remote Storage
Hello
I'm considering a ReadyNAS buy, either the RN104 or the RN314.
Is either NAS suitable for running live VMs on remote storage across eSata in a medium-volume production environment (8-10 workstations accessing a Win2012 R2 DC on a VM)?
Or are they instead intended for backup & file storage only?
Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe RN104 certainly isn't enough - its an entry level ARM product.
The RN314 can run 32 bit VMs if you install VirtualBox. The RN516 supports VT-x, so it can run 64-bit VMs.
Not sure about the performance in a production environment, as I have no personal experience with running VMs on either platform. - InteXXLuminary

Aha. Thanks, glad I asked.
So here's what I'll probably end up doing:- Recommend the RN516 to my customer--who has the 8-10 workstations--along with the RN104 for offsite backup
- Get an RN104 for myself and use it for onsite backup
One final bit... can the the RN516 replicate to an offsite RN104 at the individual share level and with different size volumes?
Thanks,

Fairbanks, Alaska - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou will need to install virtualbox. There is some information on that in the forum.
I don't use replicate myself, but according to the documentation it will back up individual shares. Not sure if that includes individual LUNS or not.
I don't think volume size will matter, as long as the receiving system has enough space. - InteXXLuminary

I found plenty of forum posts under 'virtualbox' and plenty under 'replicate,' but nothing under 'virtualbox replicate.'
I'm not having much luck with a general internet search either.
I guess I'm having trouble understanding how virtualbox fits into a replication scenario. Could you clarify?
Thanks,
Jeff Bowman
Fairbanks, Alaska - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserVirtualbox is to run a VM, it is not related to replicate.
