RN104 with Multi-Drive eSATA/USB Enclosure

Trying to get the RN104 to work with a 2-bay eSATA/USB 3.0 enclosure.

eSATA causes the RN104 to hang. I'm hoping to get some feedback on that issue here:
viewtopic.php?f=65&t=78923

Windows will see both drives in the enclosure via USB with no issues.
Over USB, the NAS will only mount the 1st drive in the enclosure.

Looking for suggestions, is this a usb driver limitation? Can I use SSH to get it to see and mount both drives?

The enclosure also has a sleep mode. When connected to a windows machine it will power down when the USB port goes into suspend.
How can I enable USB suspend/sleep on the RN104 so it will sleep and wake when accessed?

Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Concerning the USB issue.

Last night I tried the drive enclosure on a RN314 and tested it with firmware 6.1.8 and 6.2.0 in FLEXraid.

eSATA behavior is noted here: viewtopic.php?f=65&t=78923

I also tested the enclosure on the 314 via USB and discovered a difference in how the two models handle multi-enclosures over USB.
USB was the other option for getting this enclosure to work with the 104.

Unfortunately, the 104 will only mount one drive at a time even if there are two drives in the enclosure. If two drives are in the enclosure, it will only mount the drive in the 1st bay. If the enclosure only has a disk in the second bay, it will mount that one. So the NAS can see both bays, but refuses to mount both drives at the same time.

When I connected the enclosure to the RN314 via USB with both drives installed, it magically mounted both drives as external storage without issue!
This is what I need it to do on the 104. So what is preventing the 104 from working over USB while the 314 does it perfectly? Can the 104 be made to behave like the 314 does with multi drive USB enclosures?

Looking for suggestions, I'll also raise the issue with support.
  • I've got an enclosure I was thinking of connecting to my 316, not tried it yet.

Can't answer you query about why the 104 doesn't work but hopefully the thread bump may find somebody who does. I'm curious too.
  • I'm also curious about this thread. I have a few USB/eSata enclosures, both single and multi drive, which I'd like to be able to use on the 104. At the moment most of them are hanging off the pc as networked media shares, it would be much simpler if I could attach them to the 104 and share everything from one place. It seems strange that this topic has been talked about for over a year but there doesn't appear to be any definitive answer from support as to what exactly can and cannot be done with the attachment ports on the 104.
  • Just tried with 6.2.2 and things are improving...

Seems to work reliably on the front USB port. GUI consistently sees both drives in the enclosure on hot plug or NAS boot.

Rear ports are not as consistent. GUI does not see the enclosure drives when hot plugged, it sometimes will see one small partition (128Mb of 128Mb) saying file system not recognized.
After playing around with power-cycling the enclosure and rebooting the NAS it did eventually see both drives.
If I then eject both drives and re-plug into rear port, GUI shows the 1st drive only and says file system not recognized.

At this point if I eject the one drive that it shows and plug back in to front port it will again show both drives normally.

eSATA is also improved, no longer hangs GUI trying to expand. Now shows the first drive as external storage, but does not show the second drive.
  • Above I reported that eSATA was only showing the first drive in the enclosure with 6.2.2

After trying eSATA some more, it is showing both drives on hot plug and boot. Not sure what the problem was before, but it does appear to be working with 6.2.2
