RN314 Missing from Network Folder
Hello all, I just purchased a RN314 and am brand new to the ReadyNAS world. I am running Windows 7 Pro 64bit on all my PCs. The network icon for the RN314 is missing to access the SMB shares. The Media device icon is present. I can manually access the shares by the UNC path as defined by the host name I chose for the device When I do this the computer icon shows up on the left hand side but goes away as soon as I close Windows Explorer.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat version of ReadyNAS OS? Is the NAS in the same workgroup as your PCs?
- cbgiffordAspirantVersion is 6.1.2 and yes the workgroup is set correctly
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOther posters have also commented on this (with the older ReadyNAS products as well). Some reports say that different computers on the same network behave differently. I suspect Windows, but it is hard to say.
One workaround is to create a desktop shortcut for the NAS, and not bother with the network list. - cbgiffordAspirantI would not think it would be Windows since the problem was on all the machines I resolved the problem by changing the name of the work group and back again. Now all the icons show as expected on all the PCs.

Well, the NAS advertises, and windows discovers. Either can go wrong. In any event, there are posts here from people who have this problem on one PC, but not others.cbgifford wrote: I would not think it would be Windows since the problem was on all the machines...
Great. My guess is that it will come back at some point. Let us know either way - it would be helpful to have a possible work-around for this.cbgifford wrote: I resolved the problem by changing the name of the work group and back again. I checked another machine and it was gone as well. A refresh on both machines brought it back. The icon disappeared every couple of minutes. I thought it may have been related to topology since all three devices are on separate switches, so I put admin machine on the same switch as the RN314, everything disappeared except for the Media icon. So I tried changing the workgroup name back and forth and that did not fix it this time. A graceful reboot of the 314 got the Storage icon back, however the compute icon was still missing. When I clicked on View Device Page of the storage icon, it took me to 127.0.0.1 on both machines. Then I changed from dynamic IP to static IP and rebooted the 314 once again. Still no change in the device web page address. All the while, I could access the device using the host name. I even created a short cut on my desktop using the host name. So I changed the host name. When I refreshed the network folder, the storage icon came back and with the correct IP address for the device web page this time.
Windows problem, I doubt it. OS 6 is still rough around the edges being only six months old. I hope Netgear technical support monitors the forums since I see no need at this time to contact them to have them deny me support since my hard drives are Western Digital Red 4TB and not in the ECL yet.
Not a big deal since I work with UNC paths anyway and creating a Shortcut - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
My faith in Microsoft isn't as high as yours. This issue happens with all ReadyNAS, not just OS6. And the same issues appear on threads in the Synology forum.cbgifford wrote: Windows problem, I doubt it. OS 6 is still rough around the edges being only six months old. - cbgiffordAspirant

:D Trust me :D , my faith in MS is not as high this post leads you to believe. I am a developer, using MS tools since the mid 80s and I am always fighting the tools working around "features"
I just have a hard time believing it's windows when my LInksys AP works fine, my WD cloud works fine and when I do see the Storage icon, it likes to have the internal loop IP address in the device page instead of the correct address. I am going to try an OS reset once everything is transitioned to the box and see what happens. - cbgiffordAspirantThings have been solid now since the last post except for the 127.0.0.1 being reported as the device's web page. Since all I need to do is put in the host name in the address box in my web browser, I see no need to monkey with things any more than I already have.
