RN316 Not expanding & "cannot connect discovery server"
Hi all,
I'm trying to expand a 5 disk 3TB RN316 on X-RAID2 to a 6 disk 3TB X-RAID 2. Firmware is 6.1.9 beta RC5. Five of the drives are seagate 3tb barracudas and one of them is a seagate NAS 3tb disk. They are all on the compatible hardware list.
When I add the disk, it boots up and gives me a "Cannot connect discovery server error" yet I can still access it from my browser and everything seems fine.
Furthermore, RN316 doesn't expand to the disk I just added, which is the main issue I'm having. The browser says that the disk is in an "unknown" state. The drive I'm expanding had ntfs but I deleted all the partitions/volumes before adding it to the NAS.
Here's what it looks like when I try to access the system using the browser:

Drive in question is in an "unknown" state???

I don't know what having not green dot on the right hand side means... usually if the disk isn't in a volume it's black, but it's blue...

Showing that the nas isn't rebuilding/expanding

What does having a black dot mean here???
thing's I've tried:
- rebooting the nas twice
- formatting the drive in windows again
- adding the drive when the nas is on
Will downgrading the firmware to 6.1.8 delete my data? What about re-installing the OS?
I don't want to do a factory reset.
Any help expanding this volume would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

- chirpaLuminaryDo you have both NICs connected to stuff? I've found the 'cannot connect discovery server' message happens often with both NICs connected, default gateway logic is off on these systems compared to other manufacturers.
- FourierTAspirantNo, only the top RJ45 port is used.
Any other ideas about why the volume won't expand?
Thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTry unformatting the drive in windows. (deleting all the volumes on the disk). You can do this by right-clicking on computer, and selecting manage. Then hot-insert the disk.
- FourierTAspirantUpdate:
I unformatted the drives and hot plugged it in and it didn't work - no expansion. The thing is, when I pull the drive out again and check it in Windows, I can see that the RN316 partitions it into 3, but it seems to just stop there and not actually expand the volume.
Things I've also tried:
- downgrading firmware to 6.1.8
- reinstalling OS from the boot menu
- Ran seatools for dos long test - passed. no bad sectors found.
- uninstalled all apps

- anna_arunNETGEAR ExpertCannot connect Discovery Server comes if your DNS setting is Wrong or there is some issue on Internet connection to the Box . Go to Cloud settings on the webpage , Switch on the ReadyNAS Remote or Cloud and see if it shows Tick on Internet connected . If not there is some problem with your connectivity .
Box will be accessible on the local network without any issues . Discovery Server is Just for the box to get to Internet for Antivirus / Firmware Updates automatically .
Should not give a problem unless there is some issue on the HDD . Before Inserting the HDD , there should be no partition .
May be you can also check with a Higher capacity than 3TB . My Guess is the HDD you use may have lesser sectors than all the other drives . (Not Sure)
Best is to Contact Support for the expansion issue... - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Seems unlikely, since there are 4 other ST3000DM001 already in the array, two with the same firmware.anna_arun wrote: May be you can also check with a Higher capacity than 3TB . My Guess is the HDD you use may have lesser sectors than all the other drives . (Not Sure)
