Not true. You are running the latest firmware already.
Your confusion is that you mistakenly think you have a v2 (arm-based) NAS. In fact you have a v1 (sparc-based NAS). The labeling is confusing, and there are lots of people who have made your mistake.
A v1 NAS
- runs 4.1.x firmware and cannot run 5.3.x
- has Duo on the front panel
- Might have labels that say v2 or even v3 on the side or back.
A v2 NAS
- runs 5.3.x firmware and cannot run 4.1.x
- has Duo v2 on the front panel
FWIW, both NAS were discontinued long ago - your Duo was discontinued in 2011. A new NAS would be 4-5x faster, and would have more features. The current entry level ReadyNAS is the RN212.

That is because you have the V1. There have been some confusion on the RND2000v2 VS. the Duo V2. Duo V2 runs on OS5.x while Duo V1 on OS 4.x.
The labeling might have confused you but if your Duo is on OS 4.x then definitely it is a V1.
You can differentiate a V1 to a V2 by checking this informative link.
