RSYNC backup og Vmware/veeam replicas
Hi
To be honest I couldn't find the correct NAS when creating this post.... the NAS I am having trouble with is NETGEAR RN42600-100NES.
I've setup RSYNC backup between my two ReadyNAS 426 and most of the jobs are running fine. But one job keeps failing. It's the replication of the NFS enabled datastore where I keep my Veeam replicas of my vmware virtual machines. I've troubleshooted all morning and found out that the problem is file permissions. I get a permission denied on the files in the rsync log. I can configure the security settings manually on the VM files so that they can be accessed by rsync and syncronized but the problem is that each time the Veeam replication job runs it creates new files, and some of them (vmdk files at least) doesn't inheret the security settings from the folder on the ReadyNAS....owner on these files are some unix\guest user (at least Windows tells me that). I cannot see a guest user either on the ReadyNAS and even if I try to change owner on the folder on the ReadyNAS new files are still created with this unix\guest as owner.
Can anyone help me out here? Or perhaps can anyone tell me if I should use another syncronization method than rsync for veeam replicas?
Best Regards
Thomas

Quick update... I believe that the reason why the guest user is the owner all new files is that it's an NFS mounted datastore on the vmware server which is mapped just by host ip and cannot be added by username...which is why it uses the guest user on the readynas.... please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does the NAS have user accounts and groups that match the UIDs/GIDs of the accounts on the VMserver?
Perhaps use ssh, and see if the UID/GID of the files are preserved or not (ignoring the user/group names).

Hi and thanks for the answer. No it doesn't have accounts and groups matching the ones on the VM server.
Done some more testing and it seems like the problem is that the new files created when a snapshot is created, they havn't got inheritance enabled. When I enable inheritance on these files everything works fine. Funny thing (or weird) is that when the first snapshot is created inheritance is disables and permissions are changed but not "very much" so this snapshot can still be accessed by rsync. But then when another snapshot is created all permissions are removed except for the guest user and then the rsync error occurs.
Any suggestions on how to enable or force inheritance on these files? Perhaps if it is possible to run a script automatically on all new files created in a share and it's subfolders?
