rsync path limitation?

To get rsync working, you need to enable the rsync service (network, standard file protocols) and you also need to enable it for the shares (via shares/share listing). You've done both steps? Maybe also try setting everyone to read/write access on both the source and the destination shares. use the "advanced options" tab for the share to reset/apply the access changes.
I also suggest trying a different file protocol (perhaps NFS) to see if that gives you different results.
