Rsync PC to ReadyNAS

I have been trying to follow the instructions here:
http://analystdeveloper.com/blogs/gurkaneng/archive/2007/08/05/3493.aspx
to pull my W7 "Users" sub-folder to my ReadyNAS but I haven't had much luck.
Frontview has change a little since the guide as put together in 2007.
Would someone who has a currently working system please post some up-to-date screen shots or syntax?
I've just got too many variables in the air at the moment.

EDIT: added link

    I think Deltacopy uses an old version of Rsync. Have you tried replacing the Rsync in the Deltacopy directory with a newer version?
  • V1.4 of DeltaCopy was released in November 2009.

    Where would I find a current windows version of Rsync?
    (I think this has got to the point where it's taken long enough and there are other ways to skin the cat for now; I'm still keen to hear from someone who actually has it working. Thanks again for your efforts mdgm.)

    You can get it using e.g. cygwin. Plenty of posts on web as to what files to copy.
  • Grrrrr
    I completely disabled the W7-64 firewall and had partial success.
    EDIT: the files are actually copying across now.
    Here is the (still failed) log:

    Job: 002
    Protocol: rsync
    Source: 192.168.1.40::Backup
    Destination: [Data]/Technology/Backup/VPCZ2/Rsync

    gid 4294967295 (-1) is impossible to set on "/Data/Technology/Backup/VPCZ2/Rsync/."
    uid 4294967295 (-1) is impossible to set on "/Data/Technology/Backup/VPCZ2/Rsync/New Text Document2.txt"
    gid 4294967295 (-1) is impossible to set on "/Data/Technology/Backup/VPCZ2/Rsync/New Text Document2.txt"
    ./

    total size is 0 speedup is 0.00
    rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1536) [generator=3.0.8]

    Huh? :?

    EDIT
  • onimod: I'm using rsync from win7 to my NAS also and am getting the same permission issue you've posted above. My setup is using cygwin rather than deltacopy, but otherwise exactly the same. Have you made any progress on this permission issue? i'd really like to get this fixed. The strange thing is that for a while my setup was working just fine, the suddenly I started getting this permission issue. Not sure what might have changed.
  • Nah
    I gave up for now and reverted to pushing from the W7 machine until the Rsync issue gets resolved.
    My basic understanding is the the Rsync module in the ReadyNAS needs an update or additional code to be compatible with the current published version you'll find in Deltacopy.
    WhoCares? goes into more detail and offers a workaround in the threads linked above.
    The Rsync is actually working; it's just that the log isn't very elegant.

    I think it's the other way around. The version of Rsync included in Deltacopy is quite old (understandable as Deltacopy was last updated November 2009). So copying the latest Rsync (e.g. from cygwin) into the Deltacopy folder is the way to go (instructions on what files you need to copy can be easily found on the web).
  • I have the same problem, and don't want to overwrite my rsync package. The problem for me stems from the fact that my PC has some files from old backups and the owner/group are invalid. I don't care about ownership for those files, so I tweaked the Frontview backup script to stop syncing over uid/gid. To do this, ssh into your nas and edit /frontview/bin/backup and change this line:

      $password_param $nice rsync -aA${rsync_option} \$'${login_param}$backup_source_path/.' \$'$dest_path' &> \${TEMP_COPYLOG}

    to:

      $password_param $nice rsync -rlptD -A${rsync_option} \$'${login_param}$backup_source_path/.' \$'$dest_path' &> \${TEMP_COPYLOG}

    note that there are two occurrences of this line - one for NFS->LOCAL, the other for RSYNC->LOCAL. Since most of us are using rsync daemon on Windows, you want to modify the second line. Enjoy.
