You macmini will be powerful enough to run plex - why not use that and an Ultra 2 as storage? Is leaving the mini on 24/7 so bad? Works for me. And if you really feel the need you can have the mini & NAS sleep automatically and use wakeon lan to power them up. Plenty of posts on the forum about doing that, even remotely.
