I don't see anywhere stating where they shipped from, I did look at/record the smart data on the very first boot and they are not previously used/returned drives, though since then one of the drives has re-allocated sectors already, in just a couple hundred uptime hours, They are now (as of 12/21/08) in production enviroment.
I have not flashed them yet.

I was under the impression that any reallocated sectors are very bad and mean the drive is going to fail soon... - starbuck_AspirantI Purchased 2 Seagate ST31500341AS drives that came with Firmware SD19.
P/N 9JU138-336
Firmware SD19
Date Code 0912
Is the S/N Number also required for identifying the drive?
S/N:9VS0HRxx
S/N:9VS05Kxx
Is it correct that I need to update the Firmware from SD19 to SD1A?
Could somebody please confirm that?
I just want to be sure not to flash the wrong firmware to the drive.
Thank you.

You don't want to mess around with 3rd party feedback. Chat w/seagate direct and get the word from them. I just got 5 drives and am about to use Seatools to check firmware versions before calling... - bonezAspirant

The downside is, All 4 drives are:
PN: 9JU138-300
FW: SD17
Date: 09141
Site: TX

Just got 5 from an Amazon order I placed Sunday Dec 21st w/2nd day air. Firmware is SD18, date code: 09201 (means manufactured on Sat Nov 15th) for all 5.
Here's the date code translation for anyone looking for it.
Date Code Shape: YYWWD
* YY: fiscal year, beginning on the 1st Saturday of July YY-1
* WW: fiscal weeks from 1st Saturday of July YY-1
* D: days from the beginning of week WW (weeks run from Saturday to Friday)
Seagate's closed the 24th/25th..so i'm waiting until the 26th before doing anything with them. want to flash them first thing after hooking them up and want to make sure i've got the right firmware before doing so. - nvladikAspirant

Pretty bad in my experience. The drive I had went back to Amazon already. I ordered two new drives from Newegg, CC1J firmware on both. Seems pretty new, no issues so far. - bonezAspirantGoing with my previous advice, I wanted to talk to seagate to see if I needed to upgrade my drives (especially since the manufactured date of Nov 15th was so close to when the SD1A firmware was released). I just got done with Seagate tech support (live chat) - here's the transcript of the session below.
In short, it appears that an SD18 firmware preloaded on the drive is equivalent to SD1A downloaded/flashed.
Network connection re-established.
Hello. How may I help you, MB?
MB: Hi there - I wanted to get the updated firmware for my Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB internal drive.
Yvonne A.: What is the current firmware on your drive?
MB: SD18, as printed on the label
Yvonne A.: SD18 Is the most upto date firmware on this model drive
Yvonne A.: THere is no update for this drive
MB: great - just wanted to doublecheck. so it's actually more up-to-date than the SD1A firmware?
Yvonne A.: SD1A and SD18 are the same firmware only SD18 are the drive that come out straight from distrobution
MB: ahh - great to hear. I appreciate your time. thank you so much.
Yvonne A.: Let us know if we can help you more, have a nice day. Bye now.
Guess the only question now is... what's the DIFF between SD18 and SD19? (guess not significant enough to justify releasing it on the side?) - iProb8GuideHappy holidays, Everyone.
On December 24, I received four 1.5TB Seagate drives that I had ordered from NewEgg just a fewe days earlier. All drives had the CC1J firmware. The drives were shipped to me from somewhere in California.
That same day (12/24), I installed all four drives in a brand new ReadyNAS NV+ that I received at the same time. I'm running FrontView 4.1.5T37. I've spent the past couple of days migrating data from a series of USB and Firewire drives to the ReadyNAS. This morning, I decided to check the streaming capability of the ReadyNAS, so I opened DVDPlayer on my 2007 MacBook and then navigated to the share on the ReadyNAS that has all of my ripped DVDs. I picked one and started to play. To my disappointment, the playback was, at times, choppy. Specifically, the video (and sometimes audio) occasionally would freeze for a few seconds and then pick up. I tested this for about 5 minutes. I then tried the same test but used the original Video_TS file that was stored on a FireWire drive attached to my 24" iMac (the FW drive is shared so I could access it from the MacBook); everything played back very smoothly. Should be seeing better performance from the ReadyNAS and, if so, what settings should I change to see better performance?
One other question: When I checked FrontView this morning, I was greeted with two warning messages. One read, "ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 1: Previous count: 1 Current count: 2 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk." The other read: "Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 4: Previous count: 0 Current count: 2 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk." Should I be concerned about these error messages? If so, what should I do about them (call NewEgg or Seagate and request replacements?)? - phrozenAspirant

Yeah, sounds like you have 2 failing disks. That sucks. Check frontview on all 4 drives and replace the ones that have any reallocated sectors. They are bad... Newegg might be faster / easier to deal with. Seagate RMAs are easy, but you have to pay for return shipping to them and it takes a long time. (~2 weeks). - interpolatorAspirant

Drat! I'll have to contact NewEgg. :-( Thanks for the info, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear. ;-)
