I think it is time to upgrade
maybe buying a 4tb barracuda to avoiding the continuing disconnection of tthe ST4000DM004
what to buy as exterior?

I'm unclear on whether you are replacing an internal drive or an external one.
I'd get another Ironwolf, and avoid SMR (even for external drives). If this is external, then perhaps consider getting a larger one.

i will go with ironwolf now and tomorrow
thanks
I have Tb limitation? I have the readynas 414
- carlockiJan 12, 2025LuminaryI bought an ironwolf 4tb pro as external it seems perfect. so it seems.
Now I have a seagate 4Tb with st4000Dm000 and 2 of them inside the nas.
i don't know if to remove the other 2 st4000Dm000 with 2 ironwolf pro - SandsharkJan 12, 2025Sensei - Experienced UserAre you saying you added two more drives inside the NAS? If that's what you mean, that's not what you should have done. You should have replaced the drives one at a time (with a sync in between). You cannot remove drives from a ReadyNAS system without some significant use of the Linux command line via SSH, which it sounds to me like you do not have the skills to perform. You can only replace or add them. If you mean something else, then please be more clear in describing what you did.

NAS 13 years ago started with - Readynas 104 with 4 seagate (ST0000DM000) 4Tb each
UNTIL 2024 - Readynas 104 with 2 seagate (ST4000DM004) and 2 replaced Barracuda 4Tb each + 2 external 4Tb drive usb with 1 (ST4000DM000 with wake on lan/restart issues) and 1 barracuda 4tb (ST 4000DM004)) perfectly working both on usb external connection
NOW ! - inside READYNAS there is always the same HDD's but I am asking myself if replacing 2 old seagate (ST4000DM000) with 2 new ironwolf pro, in the meanwhile I have removed the seagate (ST4000DM000) with an external ironwolf pro 4tb and it is working great, read as no more issues. - StephenBJan 13, 2025Guru - Experienced User

The disks are certainly old, so one option is to replace them. Though if you have a good backup plan, you could also just leave them in service until they fail.
Are you seeing any issues with them?
Do you need more storage? Or is 2x4TB enough?
