Setup and Updating a ReadyNAS NV+
After encountering an issue yesterday, I became aware that no one in the place knew what had been done when the ReadyNAS NV+ was initially set up. No one knew what RAIDar or Front view was, etc. It has been in use for about 3 years now and I was just wondering if there are any particulars that I need to look into as far as making sure we are up to speed now. I started with trying to access setup through RAIDar and it just seemed to hang up. I am not the most tech savvy when it comes to this type of equipment. I can talk to you about graphics, prepress and printing all day but I guess this is what happens when you work for a small company with no IT dept. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

- maxblackAspirantDownload the User Manual for your NV+ and read it. Learn to access the unit using Frontview. When you are able to get access and review Shares and Logging and etc. you will want to set-up some sort of Backup for your NV+ so you don't lose the data thereon in a catastrophic failure (as you almost experienced apparently). For this you will need a ~$100-200 USB drive that is big enough to hold everything.
Having a backup, preferably keeping it off-line, is very important lest your small company lose everything in a false sense of security re: the NV+ RAID. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI agree. Reading through the manual while looking at Frontview, and perhaps posting questions here would be a good start.
And having a backup strategy in place is crucial. NV+ can fail, and you can lose your data when it fails. Also some form of off-site backup is a good idea - it ensures that you would still have your data even if there was some physical compromise at your office (fire, theft, water damage). One common approach is to rotate a couple of USB drives - e.g., week A USB drive 1 is connected to the NAS, USB drive 2 is off site. Week A+1 USB drive 2 is connected to the NAS and drive 1 is off-site.
Also - does your NV+ have a UPS? If not, get one.
