I'm considering picking up the 314 4 bay with 4x 6tb WD red drives. Couple of questions please:1) for XRaid2, will I have 18 gigs avail. as 1 volume?2) If I go for the 516, Can I initially build with 4x6tb, and later add 2 more without limitations?Any real advantage of going with 516 other than 2 more slots and better power supply?---Side note I was going to upgrade my ReadyNas Pro that has 6x2tb, but I think this is better solution by keeping that as is and getting 314. Am I missing something here?Thanks in advance!

1. Yes, well about 16.5TiB.2. Yes, there are no volume size limitations on those units. Well the 516 has a faster processor and the ability to expand is a big advantage. You'll also find it easier to use use Raid 6 which is a good idea when you are using such large drives.Have you considered the 316 - same processor as the 314 but with 6 bays.The 6 bay units have internal power supplies while the smaller units use external.

You presumably mean 4 x 6 tb as you originally mentioned. With raid 6, you'll get an 11TiB volume which will then increase by about 5.5tb with each disk addition.See this:http://ram.kossboss.com/xraid/How are you going to backup the new nas?

Great, thanks to all for help!!!!So I ordered the 316 and 4x6tb WD reds.I'll begin with that for the 10.9 TiB with RAID6.Then add two more at later date for the full 21.8 TiB. That will work, right?Also when I get my 316 and the 4x6tb, anything special I need to do first?I hoping I can just load the 4 drives directly into the unit, power it on and let it build.(or do I need to load the drives, interrupt it during build, do a firmware update and reset?)

I only getting a "Device is offline, please wait" message from within Frontview.
meanwhile the 316 is SLOWLY resync ing. now at 3.5% after almost hour.

I guess you could try another factory default, go in and interrupt the sync and create a new volume. Should be no need to pull any disks.

Your goal is RAID-6 correct?

So to expand on mdgm's procedure
switch to flexraid, and destroy the volume.
Then create a new volume (same name - data is the default), choosing raid-6.

This will of course delete any data on the NAS.

Okay, wow...thanks guys!! What a great support group/forum!!

So not sure what happened, but taking advice and restarting the Factory default worked right away, I was able to get to everything just as you all said I should see and do.

Bottom line, was able to interrupt, create a new volume with all the drives as RAID6, switched it back to XRAID and it's building just fine. Thanks again my friends!
