Shadowprotect to backup ReadyNAS NV+ assistance with setup

Hello,

I have a ReadyNAS NV+. I just downloaded the latest version of Shadowprotect Desktop to trial.

I am having trouble adding the ReadyNAS to the source list. I'm running Windows 7 64bit. My ReadyNAS IP address is 192.168.0.12 (no router, it's on a different subnet to my internet connection and connected by gigabit switches to clients.

What I have done is the following:
1. Management View
2. Add
3. Server Name: ReadyNAS
4. Server Address: http://192.168.0.12
5. Group name: (left blank)
6. Domain name: (left blank)
7. Username: admin
8. Password: (the admin password entered)

In Frontview, I have the following:
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043]
Hostname: ReadyNAS
Default gateway: (left blank)
DNS Settings: (all left blank, including Domain Name)
Security mode: "User", Workgroup: VOLUME

I tried entering just a domain name and entering that into Shadowprotect, which didn't work.

The error message I am currently getting when trying to connect to ReadyNAS in Shadowprotect is "The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found." There are 2 shares setup with a lot of data on them.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Ben

  • You said you have the Readynas on a different subnet? What subnet is your PC using? Why 2 different subnets? What are you trying to accomplish?

The server address would be \\192.168.0.12 in Shadowprotect but keep in mind that if you are on two different subnets you likely won't see each other.

What are you using as a router/gateway?
  • Yes I actually originally had the ReadyNAS on a different subnet to the PC because I needed to use a wireless connection for the iPhone to remotely control iTunes, therefore to get gigabit speeds I needed to put the ReadyNAS on another subnet as the iPhone connection needed to be on the same subnet as internet. Anyway now I don't need to do that so I could switch the ReadyNAS back to the same subnet as the router, ie 192.168.1.1

In the current setup I don't have a router/gateway on the same subnet as the ReadyNAS.

But I can connect fine to the ReadyNAS to access data and it shows up in my Network Places.

Why would the WIndows environment see the ReadyNAS and not Shadowprotect?

    Many thanks.
  • First thing, don't use the NAS admin account. Create user accounts on the NAS.

To make your life easier consider creating a NAS user account using the same username/password as your Windows user account.

Be sure to point directly to the share you plan to use for backups. I.e. \\192.168.0.12\backup
