Shares suddanly not available anymore
Hi,
I am using my readynas Duo(v1) for 4 years now and are a satisfied customer :) Now last wek some trouble occured.
Timeline:
I use the nas up to last week with several shares, CIFS enabled, All user have acces read and write. Als Add ons I use bittorrend and the foo2zjs for my HP 1005P printer. No DNLA, No PnP etc. All worked fine.
Last week (about begin october)
It started with the message that my laptop states: Could not connect Y (one of the shares), not enough resources.
By using Kitty I saw that the share are there and all data is available
Frontview is active and I on't see any stange setting.
Somehow I could get it running again bij disabeling CIFS and enable it again.
Monday 6 october.
I noticed again that the share is not accesable
Again tried switching off and on CIFS but no luck
tried rebooting but no luck
I notices also that printing does not work anymore. The job does not apper in the spooler list.
Theusday 7 october
Tried to update sparc from 4.1.8 to 4.1.13. Frontview told me succesfull although the lower left corner still shows 4.1.8?????? (Yes I cleaned my browser cache)
Than I saw on the volume page:
Also itsays on top of that page:
Still with kitty, all my shares are there and all data is stil available....
What s going wrong?
Thanks in advance
Mark

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you can still access your data and don't have an up to date backup you should backup that data ASAP.
Can you email me your logs?: http://readynas.com/kb/faq/misc/how_do_i_send_all_logs - SliceTheAirAspirantHi,
Takns for the reply
Logfiles
As I requested the logfiles after a while I got the message "website unavailable"
Now frontview is not acceable anymore, also the nas does not react on Kitty anymore.
I know I took a good look at the messages and there where no strange things going on.
Only these messages where there:
"Nas is up" Like a message that my nas restarted after automaticly schutdown and restart, I schut is down every night.
"Backup succesfull task 002"
"Backup failed task 001" Since some time I had some problems with this task. The log showed: RSYNC: rename ..... -> ...... failed, acces denied (13)
And there was a last message that the updat to 4.1.13 was succesfull (As I wrote in my previous message)
Backup
What's whise to do? Pull one of the harddrive to save my data?
About the backup. I rsync daily over the internet to the Nas my brother has. So my most important data is always save. The thing is that since a while a had troubles with one of my task (showed in the log) So is it an option to pull one drive to save that last bit of data??
Thanks mark - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell you could have a problem with your array in which case removing that may not be advisable.
Do you have a spare 2TB disk you could clone a disk onto. - SliceTheAirAspirantHi,
No I don't have a 2Tb available.
Please can you explian?
1) I thought, maybe wrong, that the disk are mirrored so an exact copy of each other. So pulling one of the disks (same as one failing) is never a problem?
2) If I had a 2Tb available (like I buy one now) ho can I create the clone from an array to a single disk when frontview, but also Kitty does not work anymore?
Is it advisable to reboort the nas in the hope I can connect kitty again and backup the last bit of data (to a small local USB device)?? Ik know exactly which directories I need in order to heva a complete set together with the data my brother has on his NAS as a backup of mine.

mark - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1) Things still may go wrong. RAID isn't perfect.
2) You can't clone a disk when you are booted off that disk. You would connect it up to a PC and clone it that way.
I think the best thing to do at this point would be to contact support and purchase paid support to attempt to recover your data. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I think if I were in this situation, I'd first check to see if anything I really cared about was missing from the backup machine. This sounds like a personal system, so that shouldn't be that difficult to do.mdgm wrote: I think the best thing to do at this point would be to contact support and purchase paid support to attempt to recover your data.
It might be quicker/less expensive to simply re-create what ever is missing. - SliceTheAirAspirantWell photos are hard to recreatie. But i agree. I try to put This last bit of data on USB And take my loss and start over with a clean system.
I will first attempt this recovery. After that I have to clean the system as it comes from factory. - SliceTheAirAspirantOk,
So the story continues. I pulled drive 1. Mounted it in an x86 Linux PC using the explenation I found on the net
http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306
and
http://technostuff.blogspot.nl/2012/06/how-to-mount-disk-used-by-readynas.html
I was able to copy my files.. I tested the files randomly, old en new, all are accesable and working. So the backup is complete. :D
Next I tried:
- OS reinstall
- Using an USB to "update" the firmware, going back to the last functional 4.1.8
Both no result. Raidar tells corrupt root.
Should I try to go to 4.1.13? because i already tried that update from Frontview, and got a message succesfull (although I doubt that)?
What could be the cause of the problem. Disks seems to be OK, Memory maybe? How can I test??
Is my last resort back to factory settings? Using another disk, and than after a succesfull start and firmware update swapping this disk for the origional disks, still containing my data? Will that work?
Regard
mark - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredA factory reset is the way to go. The problem is not with 4.1.13, it is with your array or with the disks.
Can you send me your logs after you have done a factory default with your disks and restored your data from backup? - SliceTheAirAspirantCan I acces the logs from my x86 linux pc?? Can you give me the paths?
I plan to start all over again. So with empty disk so I don't have the unused add-ons anymore.
Regards
Mark
