Slow backup speed

I am trying to run a backup job from my ReadyNAS Business Pro box to my ReadyNAS NV box and the backups seems to be taking FOREVER. I have both of the boxes connected to a TreadNET gigabit switch via Cat5e cables and have enabled Jumbo frames for both boxes. Both of the interfaces are showing 1 Gbit on frontview. I can't really determine the actual throughput, but it is taking forever to copy several gigabyte files.

Any suggestions on speeding up the link between these two boxes?

Thanks.

  • It's been a while since I timed rsync on the NV+.  But you are getting 20 GB per hour, which I think is about right.

At that data rate, the backup should complete in about 2 days total.  I think it's better to just let it complete, since stopping it now and starting over with something else (like NFS) will likely just take longer in the end.

What backup protocol are you using?

The limit is almost certainly the CPU speed of the NV platform.  Rsync backups are most efficient for incremental backups, but NFS likely will be faster if you have a lot of data to move.

Is the first time you've tried this backup?  If not, did it run faster before?

I understand that you can't measure the actual throughput, but it would be helpful if you could give us something more than "forever".  Perhaps look at the NV+ share, and see about how much progress there's been, and also tell us how long the backup job has been running.

      Thanks for the reply.

This is the first time I have run this backup to the NV and I am using rsync for the backup.

I took some measurements and determined that within 1 minute 344,457,216 bytes were copied (5,740,953.6 bytes/s).

The backup has been running for over 1 day at this point and the total size to be backed up is 962GB.

      Thanks again.
