sshd won't start
I'm a happy user of the ReadyNAS Ultra 6. Last month I updated RAIDiator from 4.2.20.[T32] to 4.2.20. I used to have ssh enabled. 2 weeks after the update I tried to login to ssh again but no connection available. Checking the NASinfo page of NASmon I noticed sshd was not running so I thought i'd enable it again using toggle_ssh. First a got the message it was disabled so i started it again to enable it. To bad, it did not work. Removed all add-ons. Update RAIDiator to the same version again (this time with more patience), stil nothing. Browsed through all the log (didn't know what to look for) but nothing out of the ordinairy. I found a config file on the forum that might help by resetting the daemon settings to default. Again nothing.
Although the NAS is still working as it should i'd still like access to the ssh :(
The last thing I was doing was trying to get couchpotatoserver in the crond for autostart. I really cannot think of anything i did wrong to wreck the sshd then again I cannot imagine it is to blame the update. I'm pretty lost now. Anyone any idea's? Isn't there a log file where the error is logged, if there is an error.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTry re-installing EnableRootSSH. Also remember to login as "root" not "admin"
What happens when you attempt to SSH in? - mrmiloTutorTried that too multiple times. Just did it once more.Re-booted. Still no go. NASinfo still states sshd as down.
Putty gives an error [Network error: Connection refused]. Ofcourse that is true because the sshd is still not running. - first of all toggle ssh is for support remote access, you need ENABLEROOTSSH addon to enable ssh access
there are at least 2 other possiblities that I can think of...
are you using dhcp? are you sure the nas ip has not changed and/or you are connecting to the right ip?
did you have SSH port mapped to the internet? did you have a weak or default password? it is possible that you got 'rooted' or hacked in linux terms.
if you can still access frontview, you could try reinstalling 4.2.10
if that does not work, you could try a FIRMWARE REINSTALL from the BOOT MENU (note: do NOT do a FACTORY DEFAULT) check the FAQ link above on how to access the boot menu
boot menu firmware reinstall will reset the network settings back to default ie dhcp or 192.168.168.168 and should reset the ssh daemon, along with the admin/root password - mrmiloTutorI know that using ssh has it's risks, i did however had ssh access mapped over the internet. As soon as the problems started i removed all mappings. My password is considered strong. I did consider the possibility i was hacked (any chance of finding that out via the logs e.a. weird ip adress connection on ssh??). Thanks to the nasinfo add-on i can still see what processes are running and which connections are made. Nothing weird to see there so if i was 'hacked' it sure was useless but maybe the hacker made a mistake and disabled my sshd beyond normal repair?!? Still a lot of maybe's. I'd really like to confirme things using logfiles. I can find many log files but they contain so much info i don't know where to start looking.
Will a firmware reinstall from the boot menu destroy my shares? And more important my Timemachine vault? (I can't risk to loose the timemachine as i'm waiting on a repair of my Macbook Pro). - ReadySECUREApprenticeOS reinstall does not erase your data. Factory default does.
- mrmiloTutorSome time has past now. I was waiting for my new MacBook to arrive before messing with the NAS even though it would not destroy my shares. I really needed to restore my timemachine backup before continuing.
So last week a got my new MacBook and the first thing to do was to restore my backup. Ok...OSX not telling me a TimeMachine was found on the network...ok...open preferences...no time machine found....ok....browse for other time machine....NOTHING WTF! I just pissed my pants. Scared i did lose all my photo's after all. Take a deep breath...reboot NAS...change pants...still nothing not even the NAS is showing in the OSX network browser. Wait. Maybe its a problem with the Bonjour protocol...stopped it...started it...still nothing. Meh. Reboot another time...nothing. Even tried to re-update but still nothing. So not only de sshd stopped working but also the bonjour service is broken.
Thankfully a could connect to the NAS manually and browse the shares using the CIFS(?) protocol. Browsed to my files share to install some programs and to my delight saw a time machine image file right there in my share!! Double-click to mount and find and copy my photo files after all. I took a beer to that!
To summarize: sshd is broken, bonjour is broken but got my files back and now to try the OS reinstall. To be continued... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat add-ons do you have installed?
If the OS Re-install doesn't fix things:
Have you made changes to /etc/ssh/sshd_config? If so try the steps here: Restoring SSH Access
Are you still running 4.2.20? Do note that there is a newer firmware 4.2.21 (http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_x86_4_2_21_Notes). You might find it helps to update to this firmware.
Keep us updated on your progress. - mrmiloTutor- I was on 4.2.21 firmware allready. (update takes forever to finish by the way)
- I never made changes to sshd_config but allready tried to restore using that file.
add-ons: git/sabnzb/couchpotato/sickbeard/plex/nasmonitor/php/python/transmission
Was trying to get ownCloud running...
Next to try is the OS reinstall...will keep you posted. - mrmiloTutorOS reinstall did not help :( guess i'll have to do a factory reset. Have cleanup the shares and move some data. Gonna take some time.
- mrmiloTutorOk, did a factory reset and now everything is back to normal again. Moved the data back, reinstalled all my add-ons (my version of sick beard did not work anymore so i'm running from source now...). Setup everything again. Much work, unhappy girlfriend but all is well. To bad i will never know what caused the problems...
