Step by Step instruction how to create Backup Job needed!

Hi,
I need a step by step instruction to accomplish the following:
I have a firewire drive connected to my Mac. On this drive I store my Photos in a folder named Foto (danish for photos!). I just need to create a backup of this folder on my ReadyNAS Duo ver. 1.
I have studied the "Add a New Backup Job" option but I'm lost in all the different possibilities. What option should I select in the "Select this readyNAS or Remote"? What shall I write in the Host & Path field?
Can someone help or direct me to a resource that have instructions made for people like me?

  • To create a new backup job:
    1. From the main menu, select Backup > Add a New Backup.
The Add a New Backup screen displays.
    2. Select a backup source.
The backup source can be a share or a path located locally on the ReadyNAS, or remotely on another ReadyNAS or a computer. If the source is local, you can select any share on the ReadyNAS or a USB device attached to the ReadyNAS, or you back up the entire data volume.
If you select a share or a USB device on the ReadyNAS, you can leave the path blank to back up the entire share or device or enter a folder path to back up just the content of that folder.
If you want to back up a remote source to the ReadyNAS, enter the remote host name, the folder path, and any login credential required to access that path.
To ensure that you have the right access to the remote backup source, click Test Connection after entering the source parameters.
    3. Select a backup destination.
This step is similar to Step 1 except you are now specifying the backup destination. If you selected a remote backup source, you need to select a destination on the ReadyNAS. The list of backup destination options is dependent on how your unit is configured. For example, you must set up an iSCSI target on your unit before iSCSI appears on the backup destination drop-down menu. Note that either the source or destination must be the ReadyNAS.
    4. Set a backup schedule.
You can select a backup schedule as frequently as once every 4 hours, daily, or just once a week. The backup schedule is offset by 5 minutes from the hour to allow you to schedule snapshots on the hour (snapshots are almost instantaneous) and perform backups of those snapshots.
    5. Choose backup options
    6. Click Apply to save your settings.
  • Hi Brian,
Thanks a lot for your reply. That was not what I wanted, because if you are new to all this you need to know what to select from the list: remote: FTP site, NFS server and so on! (And what is a NFS Server?, How do you create one on your Mac or PC? ).
Next time I suggest you draw a scenario like this : If you want to back-up a local disk or folder on your Mac to ReadyNAS you have to do the following . . . . .
I do this all the time in Sibelius 7 support here in Denmark. People tend to understand that a lot better, and so do I. Anyway thanks for your time!

    Hello Brian
I do the steps listed under 2. to backup a remote source, but I get a message "Unable to connect to remote folder: invalid network name or permission denied. Code 7077010012". It will work if I set the source folder on the windows 7 computer as a shared folder, but the folders I want to back up are not to be shared.
    Hope you can assist.
    Regards, Peter

If you won't share the folder on the PC, then you need to do the backup from the PC. Though that might not be enough for you, since in that scenario the destination folder will need to be shared. You can lock down the security to limit the access, and you can also hide the shared folder name, but it remains shared.

One option is to use a PC backup program that encrypts the data - then the source folder is not shared, the destination is shared but the data is encrypted.
