streaming media to iphone from readyNAS NV+ (it works!)
ok, ever since I got this iphone a few month's ago I have been looking for a nice way to access the music, pictures and maybe even video I store on my readyNAS NV+.
I tried crossfire, but it never seemed to work? viewtopic.php?f=36&t=31937
I tried accessing slimserver directly but that would only let me control my squeezebox, not play anything on the phone.
Tried ipeng but that never worked either. I think it is also just a remote for slimserver devices.
finally, I sprang for a $5.00 app named PlugPlayer for iphone which did the trick.
the available version did not work (2.3.xx), but the dev was nice enough to hook me up with a beta of 2.4.0.
I can now look at pictures, play music, (I haven't any iphone compatible video) over Edge, 3G and wireless connections anywhere. In my small test (my morning commute) I did not have any drop outs or issues.
This worked with:
readyNAS NV+ with readyDLNA turned on
readyNAS port 8200 forwarded, dyndns setup to handle Comcast dynamic ip
Comcast connection with 15Mbps down 3Mbps up
iphone 3GS
if anyone has another solution I would like to hear it, this seemed to be the easiest/cheapest way to go.

- mkopelAspiranthere are my exact settings in plugplayer 2.4.0:
Name: readyNAS: ReadyNAS
Device URL: http://[INTERNAL IP OF NAS]:8200/rootDesc.xml
Base URL: http://[External dyndns name of nas]:8200
timeout : 15
SSDP Re-ad : OFF
I think you must first connect on the local network so it can find the server the first time. then it will work over 3g, etc.
with these settings I am even able to stream video from my NV+ that has been compressed with handbrake iphone settings.
good luck. - hydraulixAspirantthis solution seems to be working perfect for me so far.
I just got the iphone and was praying for a "stream remotely from nas only" type of an app.
Thanks for sharing! - hapsdoggenAspirant

hi
i just downloaded the 3.4.0 version off plugplayer and it works fine on my wifi in the house but how can i get it to strem outside my home on 3G....?
i tryed to set up like you have written but i cant find my external dynds name of nas... i have the readynas duo server....
can you help...?
thanks in advance - Floob1AspirantThis looks good, but I think I'm right in saying it will only play video that the iphone likes - whereas AirPlayer will play just about anything.
But I cant see how AirPlayer would work outside of the LAN.
I'm still looking how to stream anything outside of the LAN.
The ReadyNAS remote is good for small files, but as it seems to buffer the whole file its not practical for the iPhone version. - Nosmo_KingAspirantHave you tried Subsonic? Super-Poussin has created a .bin installation package that sets up the Subsonic server. Then you can download the free Subsonic app for iPhone or Android. I use a free Dynamic DNS so even when my ISP changes my external IP address, I can still get to my router and server.
- Floob1AspirantHave you got a link for the subsonic server? Does it stream files as opposed to download?
- soremaniacAspirantAlso Great is AirVideo Server from Super-Poussin, check it out here: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=49079
- soremaniacAspirantThe iPhone/iPad app can u find here: http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html
- Floob1AspirantI gave subsonic a go, but think I was defeated by the port forwarding rules.
I'll try airvideo. - trinidocAspirantPity. Airvideo not compatible with Duo. :(
