The Ultimate CPU for Pro 6
What is the most powerful CPU that you can put in the Pro 6? The E7600 and the Q6600 are confirmed, but anybody got any further?

I was running x3210 on my pro6 for more tthan two years with stock fans without any problems.
The x3230 is the q6700, you can check it on http://ark.intel.com/compare/30797,30790
The most powerful of the same family, Kentsfield, should be the QX6850: http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/23489/Kentsfield#@All
But it has a 130W TDP, so you'll have to seriously think about cooling, I guess.

x3230 tdp is 95w
q6700 tdp is 105w
xeon priority is I/O
q priority is program/calculation

Come on, CPU8088, do you really think they are different dyes?
It's just a matter of yields and marketing from Intel...

Would a CPU with a FSB of 1333Mhz work on the Pro 6?
- eelkDec 17, 2015Aspirant
Not sure about 1333MHz, Equinox1. Probably not, just 1066MHz, because of Intel Q965, the chipset of Pro6 motherboard, supports only 533/800/1066MHz FSB (http://ark.intel.com/products/27732/Intel-82Q965-Graphics-and-Memory-Controller, again, see the dadasheet for complete description). Also, in Pro6 BIOS (v2.0) I can't see the ability to choose FSB.
I mean, the QX6850 CPU with 1333MHz FSB will probably work on the Pro6, but only with 1066MHz FSB, like the Q6600.

Not exactly, cpu8088. It is just a mistake on Intel's Q6700 page. Let's go down to the roots, I mean, datasheets. You can see the links on it on the same page http://ark.intel.com/compare/30797,30790
Check the Q6700 datasheet (http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/31559205.pdf), page 72, table 26: Processor Thermal Specifications. TDP of Q6700 is the same 95W as X3230. And you can compare all other features they are the same. And all independent tests of Q6700 vs X3230 says that they are completely equal in performance. They are just the same chips, the difference only in marketing.
