Time Machine in 2017, reliable now?
What is the current state of affairs with OS6 and time machine backups?
In the past I tried to use that feature with OS4 and it was not reliable, it would frequently become corrupted and have to be started over. I eventually ending up building up an old mac to use as a time machine server using dedicated Apple software which has been running reliably without any corruption for quite a long time. However, I'm considering consolidating everthing back to one large readynas again...maybe with the RN524, including time machine... so.... now in 2017 is time machine support on Readynas any more reliable then it was a few years ago when I was trying to do it on OS4?

Hello Dewdman42,
It does appear that you would to verify if time machine support on Readynas is more reliable compared to old/legacy readynas devices. The issues bugs and the fix of old/legacy where all considered in the design for the new series of readynas device. Also new series of NAS uses newer OS and added enhancement for MAC OS. We cannot deny though there are still end users go to forum, chat and phone for support for different concerns..

The version of the AFP/Time Machine support in OS6 is newer than what we have in legacy OSes.
We don't ignore the integrity checks that Apple does to verify that backups are completed successfully.
We will move to doing Time Machine backups over SMB, but only once we can maintain the same standards we have for backups over AFP.I see you have a Pro 2. Though not supported you can put OS6 on that unit (see OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!) and check for yourself where things are at with Time Machine backups on OS6 before committing to the purchase of a new unit, if you like.
Note: Time Machine supports multiple backup destinations. So you could backup to your Mac Server one hour and then to the NAS the next hour and then the Mac Server the next...
- Dewdman42VirtuosoI have an ultra 2 plus, already running 6.8.1 but right now not a big enough drive to use it for time machine anyway. but it's not a bad idea to try it for a while in a limited way to see how it holds up
